The Defense Matrix initiative is a series of player engagement and anti-cheat overhauls for Overwatch 2. Read on to learn about how the developers will combat cheating using this new system.

What is in the Defense Matrix Initiative?
SMS Protection
SMS protection is a cheating and smurf deterrent. Tying a Battle.net account to a phone number should help lessen the chances of cheating as making a new account means you need to register a new phone number as well.
How to Activate SMS Protection
Voice Transcription
Using machine learning developers are able to take snippets of voice chat by players in the game to use as evidence for banning. Take note that this will only be done if the player is reported by a fellow player.
First-Time User Experience
Unlike a safety measure, the First Time User Experience (FTUE) is similar to a tutorial stage. The FTUE limits new players from accessing all content upon release. This is will be a great way to keep players engaged in all aspects of the game. It will also be used as a way to ease new players into Overwatch 2.

Social Interaction
Endorsements
Similar to the medal system of the original game, players will be able to endorse the player with the most contributions in the match. Unlike the past reiteration, players can only endorse players from their own team.
The player with the most endorsement will get more Battle Pass experience.
Pre-Competitive Match Screen
A big change that developers made to pre-game statistics is that it the UI completes removes the account level. This was made in response to higher-level players dropping out of games when matched with those in the lower level.
Ping System
The Ping System was developed for players who cannot access voice chat. By using the ping system, players will be able to communicate with teammates on where to go, what to do, and other commands.
How to Use the Ping System
General Chat
With a ping system and additional safeguards to voice chat using voice transcription, Overwatch 2 developers have found in-game chat to be unnecessary. According to them, it has become a place of disruptive behavior.
