What is the Tank Role?

Tank Heroes Protect Their Team

Tank Heroes stand at the frontlines against enemies, withstanding attacks to protect their team and allow them to attack efficiently. They're deadly in close quarters and can knock enemies back while raising powerful shields.

Tank Role Passive

As the heroes who take the most damage, Tank heroes are given a passive ability of reduced knockbacks received and will generate less ultimate charge for healing and damage taken.

Jump into the Fray

As a tank, you should always be charging to the front and center of the fight. This will force the opposing team to focus most of their firepower on you, giving your team's DPS heroes more breathing room to deal as much damage as they can while you shield them.

Protect Your Team

Most tanks will have either a dedicated shield as part of their overall HP or a skill that allows them to project a shield that can be used to shield your teammates from the enemy's attacks.

Mind Your Surroundings

Most maps will have good corners and coverage where you can set up your shields in a way that makes it easier for your team to capture and secure an area. In line with this, you should also be mindful of your teammates' locations as it is your primary role to protect.

Don't Just Take Hits

Just because you're the Tank doesn't mean you have to be a sitting duck there and be a bullet sponge. Tanks can also deal some considerable amounts of AoE damage especially with abilities like that of D.Va's Self-Destruct and Reinhardt's Earthshatter.

Control The Pace

As a close-quarters combatant, Tanks also have the responsibility of pushing the fight forward by knocking back enemies or creating windows of opportunity to advance your team's objectives. Certain tanks like Roadhog, D.Va and Junker Queen can take this a step further by forcing targets out of their positions through their abilities.
