This Overwatch 2 tier list shows the best Tank Heroes to play in the current Competitive meta. Read on for a complete list of all Tank Heroes rated from S-Tier to B-Tier!
Criteria | Explanation |
---|---|
Defensive Prowess | One of the primary factors for this tier list is the defensive strength and capabilities of each Tank Hero. With each of them spearheading their teams forward, Tank Heroes that can soak plenty of damage and readily defend their teammates from threats are ranked higher on this list. |
Disruptive Capability | Another major factor for this tier list is each Tank Hero's potential to break through defensive lines and disrupt their positioning. Tank Heroes with strong crowd control abilities and unique offensive capabilities take higher spots on the list. |
Skill Synergy | We also considered each Tank Hero's skill synergies for this tier list. Having well-rounded sets of skills and strong skill combos significantly affect a Tank Hero's ranking. |
Ease of Use | Heroes with simple yet effective playstyles can focus less on properly landing their shots and skills and more on contributing to their team and winning the game. Because of this, Tank Heroes with straightforward game plans and easy-to-use abilities are rated higher in this tier list. |
These four factors were considered in the context of Competitive 5v5 Play.

Orisa and Zarya are our picks for S-Tier due to their ease of use, considerable disruptive capabilities, and high defensive prowess. Both are easy to pick up and play, and work well as the main Tank for most team compositions.
Hero | Abilities | Passives |
---|---|---|
Orisa |
Energy Javelin
Fortify Javelin Spin Terra Surge |
Role: Tank
|
Well-Rounded with Incredible Survivability | ||
Orisa's well-balanced and easy-to-use kit currently makes her one of the best all-around Tanks in the game. Her Augmented Fusion Driver and Energy Javelin are great offensive skills, with the latter being a quick and easy-to-use crowd control ability. On the defensive side, her Javelin Spin excels at breaking through enemy groups and negating their attacks. In addition, Orisa's Fortify allows her to stay alive and soak up incredible amounts of damage for her team. Combine these abilities with her disruptive ultimate Terra Surge that can take down entire teams, and its not hard to see why Orisa takes one of the top spots in our tier list. |
||
Zarya |
Particle Barrier
Projected Barrier Graviton Surge |
Role: Tank
Energy |
High DPS with Damage-Negating Barriers | ||
Zarya's unique Particle Barrier and Projected Barrier being effective at both soaking and dealing damage make her currently one of the best Tank Heroes to play. These two skills completely negate damage for a short time, with the attacks they absorb directly increasing the damage output of Zarya's Particle Cannon. With Zarya's ultimate Graviton Surge tying up her kit with a disruptive gravity well for her team to take advantage of, she proves herself as a top tier Tank in the current meta. |
Hero | Abilities | Passives |
---|---|---|
Doomfist |
Rocket Punch
Seismic Slam Power Block Meteor Strike |
Role: Tank
The Best Defense... |
Combo-Based Offensive Tank | ||
Doomfist is an offensive Tank that specializes in disruptive high-damage combos. His Seismic Slam and Rocket Punch are great for disrupting enemy positions and comboing down key enemy targets. Power Block and The Best Defense... complements his other skills by allowing him to soak damage and survive to land even more combos. To round out his offensive kit, Doomfist's ultimate Meteor Strike provides him with a disruptive high-damage area-of-effect slam. Doomfist's primary weakness is his focus on close-ranged engagements, as his abilities rapidly lose effectiveness at medium and long ranges. In addition, he relies heavily on landing his combos to deal significant damage, as his Hand Cannon is better suited for finishing enemies off. |
||
Reinhardt |
Barrier Field
Fire Strike Charge Earthshatter |
Role: Tank
|
Close-Ranged Defensive Specialist | ||
Reinhardt is Tank that specializes in defending his allies up close with his Rocket Hammer and large Barrier Field. Using these two abilities together allows him to easily protect his team from damage while dishing out heavy melee strikes to foes that get too close. To harrass distant targets, Reinhardt also has two Fire Strikes that deal great damage against both single and grouped-up enemies. For crowd control, Reinhardt sports a high-damage pinning Charge and his ultimate Earthshaker that knocks down all foes in front of him. Reinhardt's specialization in close-quarters engagements means he loses most of his effectiveness at medium and long ranges. In addition, his lack of mobility aside from his Charge can make it difficult for him to escape from tough situations and rescue teammates that need help. |
||
Roadhog |
Chain Hook
Take A Breather Whole Hog |
Role: Tank
|
Hook-Focused Close-Ranged Tank | ||
Roadhog is an offensive Tank known for his high-damage Chain Hook and Scrap Gun combo. These two abilities combined allow him to easily pick off foes one-by-one, slowly breaking the enemy team apart. Roadhog also boasts solid survivability with his Take a Breather skill, letting him heal half of his healthbar and soak plenty of damage for a short time. To round out his kit, Roadhog's ultimate Whole Hog adds another burst damage option to his arsenal that heavily knocks enemies backward. Roadhog's primary weakness is his reliance on landing his Chain Hook, as a large part of his effectiveness and damage output disappears without it. In addition, Roadhog does not have any direct way to protect his teammates, meaning he has to properly body-block shots and pick enemies off to fulfill his role as a Tank. |
||
Sigma |
Experimental Barrier
Accretion Kinetic Grasp Gravitic Flux |
Role: Tank
|
Well-Rounded with Long Cooldowns | ||
Sigma is a midrange Tank with a versatile and well-rounded kit. His Experimental Barrier and Kinetic Grasp are great defensive skills that readily protect him and his teammates from enemy attacks. To complement this, Sigma's Hyperspheres and Accretion allow him to damage and disrupt foes at midrange. Sigma's ultimate Gravitic Flux gives him a potent crowd control option that can easily disrupt entire enemy teams. Although he has a solid, well-rounded kit, Sigma suffers from long ability cooldowns, making missed skills quite punishing compared to other Tanks. In addition, Sigma also lacks mobility or escape tools, making him significantly vulnerable when his defensive abilities are down. |
||
Winston |
Jump Pack
Barrier Projector Primal Rage |
Role: Tank
|
Highly Mobile but Susceptible to CC | ||
Winston is a Tank that excels at diving into the enemy team with his Jump Pack and Tesla Cannon. These two abilities pair well for taking down key enemy targets and maneuvering through the battlefield to assist his allies. He also has a potent defensive tool in Barrier Projector, which spawns a protective sphere that shields your teammates for a short time. Winston's ultimate Primal Rage boosts his disruptive capability by giving him a massive health boost, melee attacks with high knockback, and a shorter Jump Pack cooldown. Winston's main weakness is his susceptibility to crowd control effects such as Ana's Sleep Dart and Roadhog's Hook, amplified by his large hitbox. In addition, Winston has a short effective range, with only his Tesla Cannon's secondary fire suited for medium-range engagements. |
||
Wrecking Ball |
Grappling Hook
Roll Piledriver Adaptive Shield Minefield |
Role: Tank
|
Highly Mobile Offensive Tank | ||
Wrecking Ball is a Tank that prioritizes dealing damage and disrupting the enemy team. Roll, Grappling Claw, and Piledriver allow Wrecking Ball to quickly maneuver through the battlefield and knock enemies upward and away, leaving them vulnerable for the rest of his team. In addition, his Adaptive Shield complements his aggressive headfirst playstyle by giving him temporary health for each nearby enemy. Wrecking Ball's ultimate Mine Field wraps up his kit, giving him a potent area control tool by placing down high-damage proximity mines in a large area. Wrecking Ball's offensive toolkit lacks a way to directly defend his teammates, meaning he has to body-block and take down dangerous foes to fulfill his role as Tank. Additionally, Wrecking Ball is highly susceptible to damage compared to most tanks due to his lack of personal shields and his incredibly large hitbox. |
||
Junker Queen |
Jagged Blade
Carnage Commanding Shout Rampage |
Role: Tank
Adrenaline Rush |
Disruptive Close-Range Bruiser | ||
Junker Queen is a durable and disruptive Tank hero who thrives in close-range combat. Her Jagged Blade and Scattergun complement each other well, allowing Junker Queen to pull foes toward her and pick them off one-by-one. She also has high survivability due to her Adrenaline Rush passive healing her from Carnage and Jagged Blade's wounds and her Commanding Shout providing temporary health and movespeed for a short time. Junker Queen's ultimate Rampage further increases her disruptive ability by inflicting wounds and preventing foes from healing. Junker Queen's primary weakness is her short effective range, with her Scattergun's damage rapidly falling off at longer distances. In addition, her heavy reliance on Adrenaline Rush and her slow-to-recover Commanding Shout for survivability means she has to constantly deal damage to stay alive. |

---|---|---|
D.Va |
Defense Matrix
Micro Missiles Boosters Self-Destruct |
Role: Tank
Eject! |
Offense-Oriented Close-Ranged Tank | ||
D.Va is an offensive Tank focused on close-range engagements. Her Fusion Cannons and Micro Missiles can quickly burst down most foes, making her great at flanking and dealing with enemies up close. Her Boosters complement these two abilities by giving her a quick burst of mobility for a short time. Her main defensive tool, Defense Matrix, shoots down enemy projectiles and can even negate certain ultimates when timed well. D.Va's ultimate Self-Destruct wraps up her kit, letting her eject from her mech to cause a high-damage explosion. D.Va's main weakness is her heavy focus on offense, having only one dedicated skill for defending herself and her allies. In addition, most of D.Va's skills have a short effective range, meaning she has to get up close to effectively deal damage and protect her allies. D.Va also suffers from a significantly large critical hitbox, making her more susceptible to damage compared to other Tanks. |
