As mighty as Donkey Kong is, his fists can only smash through so much. When you start out, DK will be strong enough to dig through soft and sturdy materials, but try getting into the habit of picking up chunks of sturdy terrain and use it to swing at the environment than just punching.
Not only does this allow for faster destruction of the environment, but it can also be used in combat. With a chunk equipped, you can spin the chunk around and slam it into opponents and throw chunks at enemies from a distance.
Different Terrain Types and Interactions
In addition to its utility for exploration and combat, having a chunk in hand also gives DK the opportunity to Turf Surf.
By Turf Surfing, DK rides the chunk like a skateboard, allowing you to move around faster than just walking. Mind that the chunk will whittle down over time, but it can still be useful for a boost.
While you dig through the terrain, you're bound to unearth Banandium Chips, Banandium Gold, and other collectibles. Instead of picking each piece individually, take advantage of the Hand Slap. This will automatically attract nearby collectibles to you.
As an added benefit, the Hand Slap also works as a kind of sonar, detecting and highlighting Banandium Gems, treasure chests, Challenge Ruins, and Fossils that may be hidden behind walls or buried underground.
Just in case you get carried away and get turned around as you are spelunking, you can press L to Make Music. Doing so will trigger a musical tune that you can follow towards your next objective.
This helps makes sure you can always find a way to get back on track.

Switching the difficulty to Assist Mode keeps the waypoint icon and the musical note trail permanent even if you are not whistling. This makes the game easier to play in case Normal Mode is difficult.
In addition, playing in Assist Mode reduces damage taken from enemies and environmental factors, as well as reduces the number of Gold deducted to 100 upon death and enables health regeneration when standing still.
Assist Mode Guide: How to Change Difficulty
Collecting Banandium Gems earns DK Skill Points. Use these Skill Points to boost your health, strengthen punches, and upgrade abilities like his Bananza Powers.
Grab as many Banandium Gems as you can as it is one of the best ways to power up DK early on.
Skills List and Best Skills to Upgrade First

If you need to restore your hearts, dig the on the red glowing part of the ground to uncover an Apple. Picking it up restores one heart.
You can also buy an Apple Juice for the Stuff Shop for 1000 Gold. This item restores all your hearts when it reaches zero.
How to Heal and Increase Max Health
If you ever find yourself lost or get yourself stuck, just press the Minus Button to open the map. You can then teleport to any Checkpoint, Warp Gong, and Getaway you have unlocked on the level you are currently in.
How to Teeleport: Fast Travel Guide

Make sure to have some Gold to allow NPCs to build a Getaway in the Layers. The Getaway includes a bed where you can recover your hearts and adds an additional heart. It also includes a phonograph where you can play the Music Discs that you have collected and a wardrobe to change your outfit.
Note that Getaways also serve as fast travel points, so be sure to activate all that you find as you journey deeper into the Planet's Core!
Getaway Guide: How to Build Getaways

If you talk to NPCs, they may provide contextual clues and information on where to go next or request you to do something for them in exchange for a Banandium Gem.
