The Racing Layer isn’t just a high-speed thrill ride, it is also packed with clever references to past Donkey Kong games. There are plenty of fun Easter eggs tucked into this area, and we spotted quite a few during our runs.

Double Trouble

Double Trouble

The words “Double Trouble” can be seen written along the track in the Racing Layer.

This is a direct reference to Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!

Rambi Rumble

Rambi Ramble

“Rambi Rumble” is the name of a race in the Racing Layer. It shares its name with a level from Donkey Kong Country 2, where Rambi charges through enemies and bees.

Rambi Race Minigame Guide

Candy Kong

Candy Kong

Dixie Kong mentions Candy Kong during one of her dialogue moments in the Racing Layer.

Candy is a recurring character from the Donkey Kong Country games and often serves as a save point or supporting role.

Donkey Kong Country 2

Diddy Dixie Team Up

Dixie Kong directly references the events of Donkey Kong Country 2 in her dialogue during the Racing Layer, acknowledging the game’s plot where she and Diddy team up to rescue Donkey Kong.

Bonus Stages Referencing Classic Levels

Stage Reference
Nostalgia Country Based on Jungle Hijinx from Donkey Kong Country.

Just like in the original, DK’s house can be found by going up and to the left at the start of the level.
Bramble Country Inspired by Bramble Scramble in Donkey Kong Country 2, known for its tricky bramble maze and the iconic Stickerbush Symphony.
Mine-Cart Country A throwback to Mine Cart Carnage, a recurring minecart level concept that originated in Donkey Kong Country
Arcade Country A homage to the original Donkey Kong arcade game.

There are several side-scrolling bonus stages that pay homage to iconic levels from the Donkey Kong Country series.

Fossils That Reference Classic Characters

Fossil Reference
Preserved BugPreserved Bug Zinger, the iconic bee enemy from the DKC series. The description reads: “Having a few of these puts some zing into a collection.”
Preserved BugBeaver Gnawty, a common enemy in Donkey Kong Country. The description mentions it as a “gnawty, buck-toothed critter” found from jungles to ruins, referencing Worlds 1 and 2.
Pig Pig Professor Chops from Donkey Kong Country Returns, known for giving tutorials and acting as the checkpoint NPC.
FrogFrog Winky the Frog from DKC1, known for his long leaps. The description hints, “It could leap startling distances in the wink of an eye.”
Banana BirdBanana Bird Banana Birds, a collectible in Donkey Kong Country 3, were famously trapped in crystals—just as the fossil description states.
ArmadilloArmadillo Army, an enemy in the DKC series. The note about them carrying cannons references Army Dillo, the boss variant in Donkey Kong 64.
8-Bit DK8-Bit DK The 8-Bit DK is an exact replica of Donkey Kong's sprite from the original Donkey Kong arcade game.

Several collectible fossils are subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) nods to enemies, NPCs, and collectibles from earlier Donkey Kong games.

Cranky Kong and Rambi Cameos

Donkey Kong Bananza - Cranky Kong and Rambi

Cranky Kong appears in several levels and continues his usual grumpy commentary. He reminds players that the current Donkey Kong is his grandson and the original DK from the arcade days is Cranky himself. He even throws in a sarcastic “leader of the bunch” line, a clear nod to the DK Rap.

Rambi, the beloved Animal Buddy, also appears in multiple levels alongside Cranky Kong. However, he is only available as a rideable mount in the Rambi Race minigame at the Racing Layer.

Bananza Forms Based on Classic Animal Buddies

Bananza Form Reference
Elephant Bananza Ellie the Elephant, known for having the ability to suck up and spray water and a fear of mice and rats.
Ostrich Bananza Expresso the Ostrich, known for gliding over enemies without the ability to fly.
Snake Bananza Rattly the Rattlesnake, who charged and bounced to high places using a coiled jump.

Some of Donkey Kong’s transformation powers in Bananza are inspired by Animal Buddies from past titles.

End Credits Song Uses a Tune from Donkey Kong

End Credits

One part of the end credits song uses the same tune as the title theme of Donkey Kong and incorporates the following lyrics:

"Look at us, so big and small. Two together through it all.
Heart of gold, a wish come true...
You and me...unbreakable"

Pauline's Diva Dress

Pauline's Diva Dress is an unlockable outfit that you can obtain after completing all of the 5 Elders' Rehearsal Halls. This outfit resembles the red hat and dress that the adult Pauline wears in Super Mario Odyssey.

Lady's Dress

Lady's Dress is a callback to the outfit that the original Pauline wears in the Donkey Kong arcade game. In that game, Pauline is referred to as Lady and has blonde hair and a red dress as depicted in the game's official artworks.

The Arcade Dress, on the other hand, resembles the pink dress Lady wears in the 8-bit arcade game.

Aquatic Ambience Remix in New Donk City

Aquatic Ambience is an iconic song theme in the underwater levels in Donkey Kong Country. A metal remix of the theme is used in a small section of the theme that plays in New Donk City at the Planet Core.

Donkey Kong Country 1-Up Balloons

100 Percent Balloon

Upon 100% completion, the design of the Red Balloon will be based off Donkey Kong's face versus its clean and standard design. This balloon design is a reference to the 1-Up Balloons found in Donkey Kong Country.

To double check if your balloon's design changed, open up Photo Mode as you use a Red Balloon and rotate the camera at an angle where the balloon's face is visible.

You guys forgot about a classic animal buddy. Ellie the Elephant from DKC3 is obviously the basis for the Elephant Bananza. They even have the same ability of sucking in and throwing projectiles
