Tycoon is a Companio activity where you can play a 4-player cardgame in Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X). Learn how to unlock Tycoon, how to play, ranked mechanics, tips and the rewards here!
|
|
Tycoon is a 4-player cardgame against other players in the Ranked Match mode or against the computer in a Solo Match mode. Each player starts with 1/4 amount of cards in a deck and your goal is to be the first player each round to play all cards before others.
The lowest card value is 3 increasing up to the face cards (Jack, Queen, King) then Ace and 2 being the highest value card. You can play your cards if its value is higher than the previously played card, essentially stacking the pool until everyone passes.
Additionally, you can play pairs of up to four cards of the same value. If the played card was two or more of the same value you need to play the same amount of cards that has higher value than it. For example, if someone played two Kings, your only play is to use either two of your Aces or Twos.
| Special Card | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Joker | Higher value than 2, can be used in combination with other cards to make a pair or more. | You can use the Joker to have 4 cards and start a Revolution. |
| 3 of Spades | Higher value than Joker, can be used to end the turn if a single Joker was played. | This is only applicable to the 3 of Spades. |
| 8 Stop | Can immediately end the turn and start your own turn. | You can use multiple 8 Stop cards and it will have the same effect. You still need to have a lower value card for you to play this. |
| Wonder | Immediately ends the turn no matter the value of the previous card. | Each player, each round will always have 1 copy of Wonder card. |
These are the cards with effects that can change the tide of battle. Always take into consideration that either you or the opponent has these, so play around them when necessary!
After the first round, the first player to discard their hand is deemed the Tycoon and gains 30 points. Second will be Rich gaining 20 points. Third, is the Commoner gaining 10 points. Fourth is the Beggar gaining no points.
Next round, Rich and Tycoon players will give any of their 1 or 2 cards to the Commoner and Beggar at the start of a new round. Commoner and Beggar players will have to give 1 or 2 of their highest value card to the Rich and Tycoon players.

Maintaining your rank as high as possible will add more to your total points and the player with the highest points after 3 rounds will be the winner. However, do be careful because not winning a round first as a Tycoon will instantly place you as the Beggar next round.

|
In a match, it is better to play single low value cards first as it will keep your options open against other players.
If you have pairs or triples, it is better to keep it in hand and use it as a reaction to other players rather than playing it on an empty table unless if you are pushing to lock out players from playing other cards.
8 stop cards are powerful effects that can turn the tide of your game. It is better to hold on to it especially when you can chain it with a card that will empty your hand right away.
Only use the Wonder card if you have a high value pair or triples in your hand after playing it. This will ensure that other players will be forced to pass and give the turn to you again.
Revolution is activated if any players play 4 of the same value cards. This will flip the values of all cards in the game for a round unless another player does the same thing countering it. It is better to play a revolution if you have a lot of low value cards because having two pairs is still a great hand.

During the late game, it will be paramount to keep track of what cards have been played. For example, you are competing to be in third place, and you see that all of the higher value cards have been played.
During this scenario, it would be best to play cards of high value as your opponent cannot retaliate! Always keep in mind that there is only a maximum of four cards per value, so always play around that threshold!

You can also play against other players in the same range of rank as you in Tycoon. The mechanics are the same other than the turns are in real-time and you need to wait for other players to do their turn before you. Winning a ranked match will place you in a rank while losing a match will reduce your rank.
Each season will feature a special rule that will change the flow of the game alongside rank reset and more rewards.
