Matador Boss Guide

Add to Watchlist

Persona 5 The Phantom X Matador

To defeat Matador found in the Mementos of Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X), sequence your spells and attacks based on his current mode while purposely avoiding additional stacks of Capote. Check out the essential details, including the weaknesses and resistances of Matador and its notable attacks, as well as the best team composition here.

Matador Boss Overview

Recommended Level

Matador Boss Info

Enemy Level Lv. 36
Recommended Level Lv. 41

The Matador fight is set at Level 36. However, it is highly recommended to tackle this boss with a team that is at least Level 41.

At this point, the Revelation Cards should be unlocked upon reaching Level 35, so scaling Wonder and your team with them will essentially guarantee your victory against Matador.

Matador Boss Stance Change

Stance Effect
Reverse-Cape Sweep Step Evades all Skills and Gun attacks.
Mirage-Reverse Step Evades all Physical and Gun attacks.
Cape Sweep-Mirage Step Evades all Skills and Physical Attacks.

The main gimmick of the fight is that Matador will change evasion stances every time you hit him. These modes allow Matador to evade a specific set of actions, so you will have to differentiate your actions after hitting him.

Due to the way this fight is set up, it is recommended for players to bring a thief that heavily specializes in Physical Damage such as Skull or Soy. Additionally, you can also bypass Matador's evasion mechanic by using Highlights!

Press On Matador’s Turn Order Icon to See His Active Stance

Matador Boss Active Stance
To ensure what stance Matador is in, you can check his current status by clicking on his icon in the top left corner of the screen. Doing so allows you to avoid a lethal mistake during a high-pressure moment!
How to Change Turn Order

Hit Matador to Reduce Capote Stacks

Matador Boss Estocada
Whenever Matador's turn passes, he will gain 3 stacks of Capote. On maximum stacks, Matador will begin spamming his Estocada attacks, often leading to a guaranteed down on any party member. To avoid this, simply connect with your attacks to remove one stack.

Observe Matador's Capote Stacks

Matador Boss Capote
You can observe Matador's Capote stacks by looking at the timewatch icon when targeting him, allowing you to gauge whether or not it is crucial to attack him or set up your DPS character.

If you were able to get your hands on Ryuji either as your 5-star choice or reward from the Starter Banner, then the Matador fight should be easy to navigate! The premium team to fight Matador is composed of Skull, Closer, Leon, and Puppet! These are their roles during the battle:

  • Skull: He will be your primary DPS when Matador is exposed to Physical attacks.
  • Closer: She covers the Electricity weakness for spells while dealing with Bicorn.
  • Leon: He single-handedly activates Skull's primary condition by converting his HP into a Barrier, activating Skull's Rebound!
  • Puppet: Additional barrier support to divert the AoE damage of Matador.

As for Wonder, he will act as a means of setting up Skull and Closer by applying Shock and increasing the general critical hit rate with Ame-no-Uzume's passive. He will also act as the healer by utilizing Principality's massive heals during sticky situations!

If you opted for a different team that uses another 5-star but are having problems with Matador, we recommend a free-to-play friendly alternative team composition revolving around both Closer, Soy, Mont, and Puppet as support! These are their roles during the battle:

  • Closer: She will serve as your main Electric DPS, which allows you to hit the weakness of Matador.
  • Soy: He will serve as your tank and main Physical DPS. He can also set up the damage to Mont!
  • Mont: She can output significant single-target damage to Matador the lower his health goes down!
  • Puppet: As a support, Puppet can drastically increase the survivability of a team with her barriers.

Like in the premium team, Wonder will set up Closer by applying Shock and increasing the general critical hit rate with Ame-no-Uzume's passive and using Principality for heals!

Persona 5 Phantom X - Team

Before you head into the fight, remember to adjust your team comp properly as well as their turn order! The game will even bring you to the Team screen just before the boss fight properly begins.

Make sure to bring the right people for the job. Otherwise, the fight will be a lot harder before you realize you are using the wrong team.

Activate Food Buffs

Persona 5 Phantom X - Food Buffs

Before you go into the fight, you could consume some of the home cooking Wonder makes in the kitchen. The food he makes will grant the team some buffs that will last for a certain number of battles. These include boss fights like in the Palace or in Mementos!
