Serpent Battle Strategy

Sail with a Karve or Longship

Serpents reside in the Ocean biomes of Valheim. Rafts are too slow in deep water, and break easily against Serpent attacks. It is recommended that you build a Karve or Longship to successfully hunt these sea monsters.

Use Spears and Atgeirs

Spears and Atgeirs are the only melee weapons capable of reaching Serpents from your boat. It is recommended that you invest in at least Bronze-tier versions of these weapons.

Use Bows and Arrows

When fighting the Serpent, it is best to use a Bow and Arrow to shoot it since melee weapons are practically useless while fighting in the middle of the Ocean.

The minimum requirement to kill the Serpent is to have a Finewood Bow, Flinthead Arrows, and good aim! This will allow players to kill the Serpent before it destroys your Karve or Longship.

Draugr Fangs combined with Obsidian, Frost, or Poison Arrows are extremely effective in dealing with these dangerous monsters.

Drag Serpents to Land

This method requires the Abyssal Harpoon and is the only way to obtain Serpent Scales and Trophies. Get the serpent to about half HP then equip your Abyssal Harpoon. Aim towards the serpent and throw the harpoon at it.

Once the harpoon is latched, get on your boat's rudder and sail towards the nearest shore you can find — Make sure you're at full speed during the tow to prevent the Serpent from damaging your boat. Towing something with your harpoon drains stamina, so make sure you're at full stamina before latching!

Keep dragging the Serpent until you're at a good distance away from the water and attack it with your other weapons as it slowly tries to flee.
