To break into the hive during The Light of Alfheim quest, solve the puzzle of the area to effectively cut off the root vines by throwing Kratos's axe through the vines in particular arrangements. Make sure to line up your shot and then wind up Kratos's axe throw by holding the attack button before throwing the axe.

Face northwest and locate the three root vines on the right-side of the hive.
Line up your shot and throw the axe through the three root vines.
Face southwest and locate the three root vines lined up nearest the hive's entrance area.
Line up your shot and throw the axe through the three root vines.
Face east and locate the two root vines lined up farthest from the hive's entrance area.
Line up your shot and throw the axe through the two root vines.
