The primary use of Smoldering Embers is as a resource to be used when upgrading your armor or weapons. These embers are primarily sourced from the realm of Muspelheim after unlocking it in the Realm of Fire Favor.

Reward for completing Muspelheim Trials

Apart from being a reward for completing the various Muspelheim Trials, Smoldering Embers can also be provided to the player through many of the chests in the realm. These chests simply need to be opened to get any embers within.
The Muspelheim Trials are generally easy to go through if the player has enough experience already with the combat system, and there are five of them to accomplish in Muspelheim. These trials generally consist of a "Normal" and "Hard" mode that players will need to both accomplish in order to move on to the next trial – each successful completion of a challenge will yield the player with Smoldering Ember.
The Impossible Trials are trials that can be unlocked by completing all of the normal and hard trials in Muspelheim, presenting players with harder variations of the original trials they go through. Completing these trials will unlock a 6th and optional trial that players can also play through, which rewards the player with a large amount of Smoldering Ember they can use.
To farm generous amounts of the ember, the best method is to simply do a complete sweep of all the Impossible Trials, which should leave the player with more than enough Smoldering Embers for their crafting needs.
