Wood is obtained from all kinds of trees in Valheim. Beech trees are the easiest ones to chop since they only require a Stone Axe. This makes beech trees the best source of wood in the game — especially early on.
Young Beech Trees are also present in almost every biome in Valheim and can be farmed for wood as well by simply punching them!

Wood can also be obtained from killing Greylings, Greydwarves, Greydwarf Shamans, and Greydwarf Brutes. These monsters prefer to roam the forests of the Meadows and Black Forest biomes early on at night, but can still be seen during the day.

Soap most likely originated from when people cooked food on a spit and the fat dripped on to the white ash in the fire and when combined with water it made a lather. Adding soap could introduce hygiene factors into the game. They could introduce it similar to how the hunger works, like, the better your hygiene, the more health/stamina you can gain. Making soap could consist of cooking meat over the spit, the fat mixing with ash and then mixing it with water could give you soap.
