Paper Mario: The Origami King (Switch)

How to Block Attacks

Enemies Turn
This guide shows you how to block attacks from enemies in Paper Mario: The Origami King for the Nintendo Switch. Read on to learn the importance of blocking an attack, how to use it in a battle, and where to practice blocking.

Importance of Blocking an Attack

Lessen Damage Received

Lessen Damage
Blocking or Defending against an attack is as valuable as attacking. When you are in a battle, you can lessen the damage you receive by blocking the attack of your enemies. Since Paper Mario: Origami King is a turn-based battle, you only need to watch out during the enemy's turn, making it a bit easier to block attacks!

How to Block Attack

Press A at the Right Time

Block Attack
To attempt to block is easy enough, you just need to press the A Button on your Switch controller. However, blocking only works for a short amount of time, so you need to wait for the right timing to be able to lessen the damage you receive. "Blocked!" will be written on the screen, so you'll know if you got it right!

When to Use Block

Best Block Timing

Block Attack Timing
Since the timing to use Block is critical, you should avoid pressing the button continuously and keep an eye on the movements of the enemies. Once the enemies start rushing into Paper Mario and are getting near, that is the right moment to press the A Button.

Generally, try pressing as soon as you can see them jump at Mario or get near the height of their attack, as you will often press too early if you don't.

How to Practice Blocking

Practice Blocking at the Battle Lab

Battle Lab Signpost
Blocking an attack is tricky and the best way to learn is to try as much as you can while you play. If you want to practice, you can visit the Battle Lab (Left side of the Museum) in Toad Town and try the Guard Training.
