Deal Extra Hammer Attack Damage

Deal more damage with well-timed Hammer Attacks
When attacking with Hammers, Boots or Items, you can deal additional damage by pressing the A button at just the right time.

How to Get Excellent Hammer Attacks

Getting the Perfect Timing

Hammer Attack Timing
Like Olivia explains in the early tutorials, you have to press the A button at just the right time to get the Excellent bonus. The timing might be a bit difficult at first, but you need to press A when the circle behind Mario turns red.

It might also help listening to the charging sound. At the peak, there will be a twinkling sound, and this is the moment you want to press A!

Hammer has a short range

Hammer Attacks are very powerful, but only hit enemies within two spaces of Mario. This goes for bosses as well, so pay extra attention to your position when using Hammer Attacks!

How to Improve Your Hammer Attack

Battle Lab Jump Training
Once you make it to Picnic Road and free the Toad stuck as an origami dog, the Battle Lab will open in Toad Town.

There, you can practice the timing of your Boots Attack and Hammer Attack, as well as Blocking.

Red Toad will give advice

The Toad in charge of the Battle Lab will tell you whether you're pressing too quick, too slow or just right, so pay attention to his advice while practicing.
