Mental breakdown happens when a character reaches max stress in battle or events and responds accordingly based on their personal deep trauma resulting to negative effects to your party.

Characters suffering from mental breakdown will have their cards replaced by special cards that can only be used to increase the number of special cards played to be free them from the status. These cards will also populate your deck and progress the enemies actions when used.

When playing the special cards, there is a chance that the mentally broken character will do an action that can help the enemy either by debuffing you, damaging a party member or using support cards on the enemies such as healing, buffs or shields.

When one character has a mental breakdown, the overall max HP of the team will reduce by 33%. If another character has a mental breakdown, max HP will further reduce by 33% again and another for the third.

Mental breakdowns do not get removed after a battle, but the progress you made when using the special cards will be kept in future battles and can be further reduced with special events.

Having all three of your party members undergo mental breakdown or lose all their health will result to a Link Crash where taking any enemy damage in this state will result to a game over.

Mental breakdown only occurs after maxing out the stress meter located below the party HP. Use healing cards, rest sites, random events or shields to decrease or negate stress buildup.

Mental breakdowns can be removed by playing the special cards enough times to remove the status. However, if the character suffers another mental breakdown in a single run, the number of special cards needed to play will increase further with each mental breakdown.

After using the special cards, you have a chance to increase the requirement to get rid of the mental breakdown by two or more. There is also a much lower chance that the character will instantly be cured from it.

After curing a mental breakdown, other than restoring the lost 33% max HP, your team will also heal some HP and recover stress and get a 4 EP discount of the character's Ego Skill for a turn however, it will disappear when using other Ego Skills.

Ending a chaos manifestation run after a character experienced at least one mental breakdown results to them getting a status effect called Deep Trauma. This opens up the use for Psychotheraphy, Deep Trauma Mode and Trauma Code.
