Cards Explained

Cards determine your actions during combat in Chaos Zero Nightmare (CZN) The three main types of cards: Attack, Skill, and Upgrade, all affect your fight in some way.

In general, Attack cards deal damage, Skill cards apply effects over a specified period, and Upgrade cards provide buffs that typically last the whole round.

Each character has 3 different card types, Attack, Upgrade, and Skill. These cards have unique effects and are used during combat for various purposes, such as dealing damage, providing shields, or generating new cards. They can also trigger Epiphanies, granting additional effects.

There are two types of cards that can inflict negative effects on your team: Status Ailment cards and Curse cards. Status Ailment cards are given by enemies, which forcefully add them to your draw pile through their effects. Curse cards, on the other hand, are obtained from unidentified areas and can remain in your deck throughout the run unless you remove or exhaust them.

Other Card Categories

Each Combatant and Partner has their own unique Ego Skill Card, which provides useful effects once you have enough points. Instead of Action Points, these cards use Ego Points. Some characters can create or construct cards through their Ego skills or through specific cards in their kit. For certain characters, these abilities are core to their playstyle and serve as the central mechanic of their kit.

As you progress through Chaos, you can encounter Neutral Cards and Monster Cards. Common Cards are normal cards with no innate Attribute, and have gray borders upon getting them. Monster Cards are special cards with powerful effects dropped specifically by bosses, and are distinguished by their rainbow border.

The new Forbidden Cards are exclusive to the first season of the Galactic Disaster event, Forbidden Catalyst, and can only be obtained by completing runs in the new Laboratory 0 Chaos area. Enter the Dimensional Tunnels in this Chaos area and choose a curse card to add to your deck. It will convert into its assigned Forbidden Card after you defeat the boss.

Debuff Cards

Certain enemies and event outcomes can give you Status Ailment and Curse Cards, which will inflict damage or debuffs. To avoid the negative effects, you must play them to remove them from your hand by the end of the turn.

Once a combatant experiences Mental Breakdown, all their cards are replaced with Mental Breakdown Cards. These cards do not do anything, and must be played in order to get regain that combatant's moves.
