For if I wielded a large weapon that even men don't use, I thought I'd earn their praise.- Shizu
Shizu was born in a distant land, to a family of samurais renowned for their skills with the blade. As soon as she and her two brothers could speak, their father already taught them proper gripping techniques. In this house, one's worth lies in the strength of their blade.
These are the words her father often spoke.
On top of being a girl, Shizu is also small, which often led to her being overlooked as a warrior. Despite this, she wanted to prove herself at all costs.
Once the time came for her to choose her first blade, she chose the great katana, an unusually large weapon that even men don't use due to its difficulty. She thought that wielding a weapon that others cannot would grant her favor in her father and brothers' eyes.
She practiced daily and with dedication. Soon, Shizu's skill with the great katana was unmatched, and she thought that she had undoubtedly chosen the right weapon for her. However, the more proficient she got, the less her father interacted with her.
Fighting is the only thing I can do.- Shizu
One day, Shizu was ordered to go through a training pilgrimage in a land across the sea. Shizu thought that she finally had the opportunity to prove herself and make her family proud. However, well into the voyage, Shizu found herself surrounded by the ship's crew with their weapons drawn. From their demeanor alone, you could tell that these were skilled combatants.
Shizu's brothers arrived and with their swords pointed at Shizu, revealed a letter with her father's handwriting that states "Kill her. Make it look like an accident and dispose of her in the sea...
From the beginning, it wasn't an opportunity to prove herself, nor is it a means of honing her skills.
For her family, it's tradition that the strongest will succeed as the head of the family. However, she is a woman, and she was never meant for this honor.
"You are far too strong. Thus, to preserve the honor of our great family, I will have you die...!" said her eldest brother. What she thought would finally gain her acknowledgement from her family turned out to be the reason she lost everyone.
After successfully defending herself and setting shore, she aimlessly roamed the unfamiliar land until she met the kind Duke. She later swore her service and her blade to the Duke's cause.
Shizu may not have been physically gifted at first, but she practiced long and hard until she became unstoppable when equipped with her great katana. All she wanted was to be acknowledged by her family, so she devoted everything to studying the blade for that reason. She was grateful to the Duke simply because he accepted her, and she devoted her loyalty to him.
Chapter 1 |
---|
I was born into a family of— what many would call—samurai. 'Twas one renowned for its swordsmanship— rumored to teach children how to swing a weapon before they're even able to stand. Of course, 'twas not too far from the truth. My two older brothers and I were taught proper gripping techniques as soon as we were able to speak. "In this house, one's worth lies in the strength of their blade." Everytime my father spoke those words, he and my brothers glanced in my direction. From the moment I was born, no one anticipated that I'd be able to accomplish anything. |
Chapter 2 |
---|
I'm a girl, and on top of that, I'm small. With brothers such as mine, 'tis inevitable that I'd be overlooked. However, I wanted to prove myself at all costs. Conceding defeat was not an option. When the time came to choose my first real blade, I chose a great katana without even a second thought. For if I wielded a large weapon that even men don't use, I thought I'd earn their praise. Anything can be mastered— even a great katana that's too heavy to control. One needs just to swing it again... and again....and again... And after practicing with the katana countless hours each day, I eventually became strong enough to endure a full day's worth of training. I even won my first sparring matches against my brothers. It looks like I indeed chose the weapon perfect for me. However, the more confidence I gained, the less my father and brothers spoke to me. Then one day, I was ordered to undergo a training pilgrimage in the land across the sea. |
Chapter 3 |
---|
My brothers and I made our way towards the faraway land on a trade ship. I believed I'd finally be acknowledged if I could bring something back to show for my efforts. But well into our voyage, I found myself suddenly surrounded by the ship's crew. With their weapons at the ready, 'twas clear that they were no mere amateurs. Then my brothers appeared, cutting through the mob. My eldest brother pulled out a letter and handed it to me. "Kill her. Make it look like an accident and dispose of her in the sea..." 'Twas my father's handwriting. From the start, this journey was a ploy to kill me. |
Chapter 4 |
---|
With his blade pointed straight at me, my eldest brother spoke. "It is tradition that the strongest succeeds as the head of the family. But, a woman must not be allowed the same honor. For should she find a husband, he will try and assert his superiority, and her family would be ridiculed for marrying off such an unruly woman." "You are far too strong. Thus, to preserve the honor of our great family, I will have you die...!" Till now, I thought they would acknowledge me if I worked hard. But, apparently, that was all one big misunderstanding. If I really was just leading myself on though... they should've said so from the beginning...! I...I just wanted the chance to be recognized by you all...! |
Chapter 5 |
---|
When the last assailant breathed their last, I stood on deck, untouched by even the slightest drop of blood. The ocean breeze begins to cool my body from the heat of battle. Fighting is the only thing I can do. Aside from training and growing stronger, I know nothing. But...what do I fight for? And for whom? No longer do I have a place to call home, let alone a reason for fighting. The seagulls cry overhead, and land approaches on the horizon. Still without a clear answer, I drifted towards this new land, drawn in by the wind and the waves. |
Chapter 6 |
---|
My lord, when we met at the end of my travels, it all became clear to me. That you—the one who accepted me— are whom I am to serve. And I knew that if you acknowledged me, I could surely sever ties with my past self. From the day I was born, I was but a blade without a master. Yet, you provided me with what I had been searching for this whole time. A reason to fight, a home, as well as...acknowledgement...praise... and a place by your side... From this point on, I will grow even stronger, and it will all be for you. I shall become the blade that cleaves every obstacle in your path... You have my word— your kindness will be repaid. |
Chapter 1 |
---|
The garden is blanketed in snow. Before my eyes, straw posts stand silently side by side. Crisp is the morning air—perfect for training. It clears the mind, sharpening one's senses. After drawing in the freezing air, I swing my great katana. Upon hearing the straw posts fall to the ground, a slow breath escapes my lips. I sheathed my blade and examined the straw posts... As I feared, every cut was far from clean. 'Twas clear that my strikes were losing their edge, yet the cause eluded me. With uncertainty clouding my mind, I entered battle, yet failed to fell the enemy... exposing the Duke to mortal danger. Though the Duke told me I neend't fret, 'tis unacceptable for me to go on like this. The blade is my only saving grace. Beyond it, I have nothing. If I am unable to wield this katana, then what purpose do I even serve...? |
Chapter 2 |
---|
To be born into a family of samurai means that mastery of the blade is inevitable. Even for me, 'twas natural to choose this path, yet I was met with my father and brothers' frigid gazes. All I wanted was to be praised, to be acknowledged. That made me pour myself into my training, yet it gained me nothing. When fate's tides swept everything away from me, all that remained was an emptiness too vast to fill. At the end of my travels, only one person took me in—the Duke. To repay his kindness in full, I must protect him at all costs. But, with my blade having lost so much of its edge, I cannot. Nor can I lay claim to stand by his side. "One's worth lies in the strength of their blade." ...My father's words haunt me still. Yes. That's why I must grow stronger. Ever stronger...! |
Chapter 3 |
---|
"Eight hundred ninety-seven... Eight hundred ninety-eight... Eight hundred nine...ty-nine... Nrgh...!" Partway through training, the pain forced me eto stop and sheathe my blade. As I removed the bloodstained bandages from my hands, I wasn't surprised to see my old blisters once again torn open. The healer will surely chastise me once more. But, if I cannot carry on with my training... "One's worth lies in the strength of their blade." Suddenly, my father's words resurface in my mind. They repeated relentlessly, like an echo rolling over the mountaintops. Am I truly void of any right to wield this blade...? An artisan's chisel carves out magnificence. A woodcutter's axe fells even the tallest of trees. But for me...what purpose does my blade serve...? "Shizu." Upon hearing my name, I raised my head, and before me, he stood... "My...lord..." |
Chapter 4 |
---|
The Duke finished applying medicine unto my hands, before wrapping them in fresh bandages. For a samurai to burden the hands of the one they serve... 'Tis a shame beyond words. "Shizu. I know how hard you've been training lately, but I just can't turn a blind eye to this kind of recklessness." The Duke's kindness knows no bounds. But as I am now, I have no right to accept it. "If I'm without my blade, I'm without any reason to be here." The Duke's hands stilled for a brief moment, then resumed wrapping the bandages. For a while onwards, a heavy silence hung in the air. After he finished treating my hands, the Duke spoke. "Can you see that tiny flower over there?" I followed his gaze, and my eyes came upon a white flower, faintly peeking out from the snow. |
Chapter 5 |
---|
That plant always bears flowers in the winter. Since the flowers bloom quietly amidst the snow, it seldom catches the eyes of passersby. "If a flower's worth lies in people's admiration of it, then does it mean that white flower is without any worth...?" "'Worth' is merely a label— an afterthought that people give out only to suit themselves," he explained. "A flower blooms whether it's admired or not. It chooses where to take root and when to bloom. Those choices make the flower. That's why it's okay for you to do the same, Shizu. No matter which choices you make, you will always be you. He told me that I needn't seek from others a reason nor right to exist... Such a thought had never once crossed my mind before... |
Chapter 6 |
---|
I needn't a reason nor right to be here? Truly...? "One's worth lies in the strength of their blade." ...Those words linger in my mind. I desperately steadied my trembling hands. Though I was terrified to voice my worries, I couldn't help but ask the Duke... "If a flower chooses its place and season, yet fails to bloom beautifully... wouldn't it only be cast away? Is a flower...worthy of existing, simply by being...?" What followed was a silence more terrifying than any frigid gaze cast by my father or brothers. My body froze, stiff as stone. Even my breath was bated as I waited for his answer. "If that is what the flower desires," spoke the Duke. ...Ahh, yes. That's right. That choice is not for others to make— 'tis for the flower. "...Yes. The flower shall bloom amidst the snow as much as it pleases... For that is what it desires." Sunlight then breaks through the clouds. Winter's end draws near. And before I knew it, the relentless echoes of my father's words had fallen completely silent. |
Chapter 7 |
---|
As the snow melts, the warmth of spring softly tinges the morning air. I don my new garments, tie back my hair, and make my way to the garden. Before my eyes, straw posts stand side by side. I close my eyes, calm my breath, and swing my katana. As I slowly sheathe my blade, the straw posts fall in silence. Every cut, flawless. The Duke's words echo in my mind— "What matters most is what you desire to do." For all the guidance you've given me, what I desire is to protect you, my lord, and all who you call friend. Thus, I shall ensure that my blade never again loses its edge. The lesson you imparted will always remain with me. Never again shall I dwell on the past. With this new attire, I vow to serve you with unwavering loyalty. I, Shizu, shall bloom proudly at your side for all eternity. Like that white flower, blooming quietly amidst the snow... |
Login 1 | Tis a pleasure to see you. Thank you for coming all this way, my lord. |
---|---|
Login 2 | Oh, my lord. 'Tis been many a day. I was relaxing here as I awaited your return. Would you care for some dango? |
Home 1 | To ponder death is to ponder life... The people we meet blossom into our lives, bidding us farewell when their last petal falls. Such words are easy to say, but difficult to truly understand. |
Home 2 | Ah, I see your attention's drawn to this katana. Your face says it all... Hahah—you think it to be too large for me. Worry not, my lord, for I'm trained to wield it as if it were part of my own body—something I'll gladly prove on the battlefield. |
Home 3 | When I cam to this land after my family betrayed me...I often resented this world for being as cruel as they were. But...there can be no rainbow without rain. If I hadn't braved through the storm, I would not be in your service today, my lord. |
Home 4 | How about stopping for a short rest, my lord? Long journeys needn't be met with haste. |
Home 5 | "A samurai's life belongs to the one who truly values it..." 'Twas not long ago when I finally grasped the meaning of those words...P-Please allow me to leave it at that. I can feel my cheeks turning slightly...warm... |
Home 6 | My word—is it your birthday? Such a joyous occasion! Shall I perform a dance in celebration? |
Victory | With this, victory is ours, my lord! |
Defeat | A worthy adversary... Hurry—escape while I hold them back! |
Skill 1 | Tis time to turn the tide...! |
Skill 2 | Haaaah! |
Login 1 | Ah, you’ve returned, my lord. |
---|---|
Login 2 | I’ve awaited your return, my lord. All is prepared on my end. Please summon me when ’tis time to depart for battle. |
Home 1 | Are you setting out, my lord? Very well, you shall have me as your companion. You’re truly admirable for surveying your domain so diligently. ’Tis clear to me why none ever question your place as Duke. |
Home 2 | Ah... Why, hello, my lord. There’s nothing quite as invigorating as training at sunrise, wouldn’t you say? Care to join me? We can start off with 1000 swings of the great katana. |
Home 3 | I finally bestowed a name unto my great katana—“Winter’s Bloom.” ’Tis a tribute to that lone flower amidst the snow, and shall serve as a reminder of the wisdom you imparted upon me that day, my lord. |
Home 4 | My lord, I urge you to take a moment to rest. As we say, “The indigo dyer need also imbue their own garments with color.” In other words, please care for yourself as much as you do for others. |
Home 5 | To think that you’ve not only granted me a place at your side, but also guidance on how to live... You’ve truly given me more kindness than I can ever repay. Thus, I vow to do so in full—till the day I’m ushered in as a guest of the realm beyond... |
Home 6 | Is today the day of your birth, my lord? Such a truly joyous occasion! May I be so bold as to offer a dance in celebration? Hmmm... Though, I do recall performing a dance for you before. Very well—what would you say to a sword dance instead? |
Victory | Your commands were brilliantly executed, my lord. |
Defeat | I can’t bear to show my face. If only I hadn’t been so careless... |
Skill 1 | ...Strike true! |
Skill 2 | Fate be swift! |
Spring Shizu Lament and Lyrics
Shizu Lament Monologue |
---|
Life's journey is long... Thus, we needn't make haste... for even if one devotes all they have, their destination may lie beyond their reach... I am the daughter of samurai, and wanted nothing more than to be acknowledged by my family... Thus, I chose to master the great katana. But in truth, I may have known deep inside my heart... That not a single member of my family... have ever loved me. Without any purpose, my blade slowly begins to wear. I have lost my edge, and no longer hold any worth... But...would you still take me in as I am...? |
