But... there is one thing I can do—Watch over those that have departed from this world.- Moddey
Moddey grew up in a village where her dad served as its gravekeeper. While he buried the dead, it was Moddey who took care of the chores. Life for Moddey was tough, but it was bearable because at the end of the day, Moddey still had her dad, as well as her beloved dog, Laila.
But since death comes for all, it eventually came for Laila. It was Moddey herself that made the grave for her, and that was the day Moddey became a true gravekeeper.
I did hear that the lord of a country is traveling around dispelling Curses. If I go with him, there’s bound to be something I can do to help.- Moddey
A disease had come to Moddey's village, and soon people were dying one by one. With no one willing to bury the bodies out of fear that they would catch the sickness, it was up to Moddey's dad to do it. But eventually he, too, fell victim to the disease. Moddey buried him herself.
Eventually, the villagers came to blame Moddey and her father for the disease coming to their village. While they were about to break into her house, Moddey herself was also sick. In the middle of the chaos, however, a dog-like apparition came for her.
The next time she woke up, she found herself with two dog ears, and the ruins of what used to be her village. After burying the bodies, she decided that she would watch over their graves as her father did. But then, she heard of The Duke, and his quest to dispell Curses from the land, so she decided to join him.
While The Duke was busy freeing the world from Curses
Despite her tragic past, Moddey does her best to be cheerful at all times, and even show a mischievous streak whenever she's with The Duke. She strives to show The Duke that she is someone he could depend on, showering him with affection at every opportunity. She also shows a deep understanding of her role as a gravekeeper, and the futility of sadness in the face of death.
Chapter 1 |
---|
I am useless in the face of death. ...and can only stand by and watch as people lose their lives. but...there is one thing I can do— Watch over those that have departed from this world. I learned that was what a gravekeeper does. My dad taught me—he was a gravekeeper, too. |
Chapter 2 |
---|
My dad, my dog Laila, and me— the three of us lived in a small village in the middle of nowhere. I heard Mom died giving birth to me... and Dad's so quiet and clumsy, he can't cook or clean to save his life. so, I learned how to do all the chores myself. Maybe that's why I like to take care of people so much. Everyone in the village actively avoided us, calling us gravekeepers "bad omens..." but, I didn't mind. Because I was happily doing my own thing. |
Chapter 3 |
---|
Laila died at the end of the summer. Dad said it was from old age. I held her in my arms until her last breath. I'll never forget the feeling of her body suddenly getting heavy, and the feeling of something important slowly leaving it. The next day, I made a grave for Laila so that she'd be able to rest in peace. I'm sure that was when I truly became a gravekeeper. |
Chapter 4 |
---|
The disease came to the village soon after that... and people died one by one— left out to rot because everyone else was scared of catching the disease. Dad refused to let me help as he began burying the abandoned bodies. One by one, all by himself... In the end, Dad died to the same disease. and when I was burying Dad, I finally realized... that humans really are useless in the face of death. |
Chapter 5 |
---|
A few days passed, and this time, I was the one that got sick. Bedridden with a high fever, I soon realized there were people outside my house. It was all the remaining survivors, led by a priest. "this all started because those two gravekeepers handle the dead! They're the ones that spread the disease!" They sounded angry, like they were about to break in any second. But for some reason, I wasn't scared... Because either way, I'll get to see Dad and Laila soon. In my fevering state, I heard the sound of a dog howling in the distance. I know whose howl it was instantly. Laila...? Did you come and get me...? ...I don't remember anything after that. |
Chapter 6 |
---|
When I came to, I was alone in the graveyard, and had these two things growing out of my head. Strangely, I felt Laila's warmth around me, and softly laughed to myself. The villagers that were surrounding my house were all long gone. All that remained were ruins of houses that had once made up this village... and bodies that had yet to be buried. A village no one would come to anymore... and a bunch of people who would slowly be forgotten... Who's going to send them off? Who's going to watch over them? What would Dad do...? What had to be done was in plain sight— Do what a gravekeeper needs to do. That's my job. It's something only I can do. |
Chapter 7 |
---|
Ever since the thundercloud covered the sky, everyday's been filled with bangs and booms... It's gotten so lound around here lately. at this rate, nno one's gonna be able to get a good rest. I did hear that the lord of a country is traveling around dispelling Curses. If I go with him, there's bound to be something I can do to help. I mean, I'm probably the only gravekeeping witch out there, right? There's no need to worry—Laila's with me. I'll be off then, Dad...everyone... When I get back, I'll tell you guys all about my adventures! |
Chapter 1 |
---|
We took some time off our journey to visit a lake... but to tell the truth, I hate water... I'll take it slow and start by dipping my feet in... Aaah! I get only one toe in, but that's all it takes to make goosebumps run all over my body, and my tail stand straight up. Sabrina softly giggled as she watched me. "To think that you're scared of the water, of all things. I guess you are a child, after all." The nerve...! I'm already a fully fledged, grown-up gravekeeper! Not some kid! I-If I get serious enough... I can...at least... Nnrrrgh...! "There, there. Everyone has something they're not good at dealing with." The water was barely up to my knees, but I was already clinging onto Sabrina for dear life... Nnnrrggh... You dummy! You big, blue DUMMY!! |
Chapter 2 |
---|
Nnnrgh... Why did I run away crying like some kid...? I wanna hide under a rock... I thought for sure Sabrina had enough of me, but she came to see how I was doing. "We'll start by helping you get accustomed to the water," she said. Y'know, Sabrina might not be so bad after all... ...Yeah! I know I'm better than this! If water's the problem, all I gotta do is fix it! "That's the spirit. As it so happens, I know something that'll help us out." After saying that, I saw her holding a bucket filled to the brim with water. ...What's thaaat...? I hope you're not gonna do what I think you're gonna do... "If you have fun playing with water, it'll stop frightening you. Here!" AAAHHH!! I can't believe you just splashed me! No matter what you say, I...AAAH!! Why's there water attacking me from behind?! Hey...uh...guys? What's with all the smiles? This isn't some water splashing game, y'know... No, wai... Sto... AAAAAAH!! |
Chapter 3 |
---|
Humans are hapless in the face of the stormy sea. There's nothing we can do but accept our fate and get soaked... I was gazing out at the lake, letting the truth of life sink in, when I heard voices. Voices so faint, only a gravekeeper like me could make them out. I could hear their pain and suffering... Something happened here a long time ago... At that moment, I heard screams coming from the lake. I turned to see everyone cowering in the water, and in front of them, a cursed creature! Right as I was about to go and save them, a strange fog ell over me. "You're useless." ...! Inside the fog, my late dad appeared right before my very eyes. "When the disease came to our village, all you did was watch." Then, all of a sudden, I fell right into the lake. The fog trapped me in an illusion. I knew none of this was real, but I was so scared... I couldn't breathe...or move... "Nothing's changed. You're still useless." Then, everything went black. |
Chapter 4 |
---|
A gravekeeper's job is to watch over the departed. Ensuring they have a peaceful rest is all we can do. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I mean, can you imagine someone dying, only to be left all alone? It'd be so sad if no one watched over them. But, that doesn't mean a gravekeeper should wait around for someone to die. After seeing the Duke save one person after another, I did some soul searching. What is the job of a gravekeeper? And, as a gravekeeper, what can I do for everyone? |
Chapter 5 |
---|
"My foolish daughter. Just give up, and rest in peace." My father's voice echoes throughout the inside of the lake. ...It's true. I'm just a tiny, useless kid. But, I realized something after I left the village. To let someone rest peacefully in their grave, I gotta make sure they're smiling before they go in. Make them smile, just like what the Duke does. Gravekeepers aren't bystanders who just watch over the departed. We have another important job-- taking care of everyone so they can smile! At that moment, something dove into the lake. No way... It's Laila! ...That's right. You always knew how to make me smile, huh Laila? I rise to my feet with Laila at my side. The illusion no longer had me in its clutches. |
Chapter 6 |
---|
When I opened my eyes, the fog had waned. The area was still blanketed in white, but I could see a figure hanging their head. "Sabrina!" There's no answer. The fog's trapped her in its prison. But, now I know the words I should say to her! "Your mother's resting peacefully. If the same thing happened to you, you'll make her so worried she'll jump straight out of her grave! Go on, show her. Show her who you are now...!" The fog starts to thicken once more, hiding Sabrina away. But, I'm not worried. Sabrina's someone who fights so that everyone can smile. ...See, look. The fog is torn apart by a blinding cascade of light. |
Chapter 7 |
---|
It looks like everyone's saved now that Sabrina defeated that cursed creature. Laila nuzzles against me, then runs off into the sky. Next to her was Dad, smiling like he does once in a blue moon. "Keep it up," he tells me. That goes without saying, y'know. I'll make everyone smile, whether they're alive or not. That's a job only a gravekeeper like me can do! Hehehe. So...don't worry about me. Dad had already said his piece. Laila barked happily...then they both disappeared into the big blue sky. Thank you, Dad...Laila... Goodbye. As I saw them off, Sabrina smiled happily at me. "You don't seem bothered being this deep in the water. It looks like you've overcome your fear." "...Ah... Ahhhhh...! Just as I thought--I can't do water...! Lailaaa! Saaave meee!!" |

Login 2 | Ah!! Finally! Just where in the world have you been, m'lord?! I've been here putting up with all this embarrassment, waiting to get going, so I expect you to show up too, okay?! |
Home 1 | Nnrrgh... Why does this swimsuit gotta be so darn tiny...? It's practically underwear...! Huh? I look cute in it? Wh-What the heck?! Of all the things you could've said, m'lord... You're really asking for it! |
Home 2 | Why are you letting me borrow your coat, m'lord? So I don't feel embarrassed? Oh, th-thank you... Nnrrgh... It's me who should be taking care of you though... Hmph. Just you wait, m'lord. Next time, I'm gonna take care of you even more! |
Home 3 | Am I getting magic power from the summer, or something? I feel being adventurous with my outfit lets me say things I'd normally be too embarrassed to say... To tell you the truth, my ever so kind and gentle lord, I like you... Hehehe! Oh, the look on your face! Betcha believed me, didn't 'cha? |
Home 4 | Aren't you hot, m'lord? Here, I got you a cold drink and a towel. If there's anything else you want... You wanna take a nap? I knew you were gonna say that, so I also made sure to have a parasol and beach chair ready for you. And, I'll even throw in a snuggle with yours truly if you want. Hehehe! |
Home 5 | You know how a witch's power comes from the heart? Well, if their heart goes through emotional changes, their power and soul will be affected. That means, if their heart is crushed by negative emotions, their power will distort, and cause the witch to rage out of control. Betcha didn't know that! |
Home 6 | Happy birthday, m'lord! Moddey here's gonna give you a special gift just for today. You can look at me in my swimsuit as much as you like! Whatcha say, you lucky guy? ...W-wait. You really are... Uuu, on second thought, stop looking!! |
Home 7 | Since long ago, waterfronts were places lost spirits could easily find their way to. That probably explains the fog. Lost spirits feel so much pain from longing to see someone... Maybe that's why they've always flock to loud, crowded places. |
Home 8 | One time, I slipped and fell into a river. But Laila was the first to jump in and save me. She was such a good girl. Always by my side, always protecting me. |
Home 9 | It's so HOOOT! Ugh! I can't take this anymore! This heat's gonna melt my ears and tail right off... I'm sure a dip in the water will make the pain go away... but… it's so scary... M'lord... You gotta do something...! |
Home 10 | How can everyone walk outside in those shameless outfits like it's nothing...?! Sabrina's wearing a swimsuit, Hathor's outfit basically is one, and Belle's practically naked...! Am I the weirdo for feeling embarrassed...? |
Home 11 | Since I'm always doing my best, you wanna take care of me anytime I'm having a bad day? Are you sure? Actually, ever since Dad and Laila passed away, every day's been… Gotcha! Did you think I was crying? Joke's on you! Hehehe. ...But, when I really am feeling tired, I might just take you up on that offer. |
Home 12 | A gravekeeper's job is to ensure the departed are resting peacefully in their graves. But, it's also nice to make them smile while they're still with us, right? The only gravekeeper who could take care of someone from the cradle to the grave is me, after all. So m'lord, want me to take care of ya until it's your time to go? |
Awakening 1 | A long time ago, I almost drowned in a river... So me and water still kinda don't get along... Aha... |
Awakening 2 | Hmph! ...I-I can do the doggie paddle, y'know... Laila taught me how... |
Awakening 3 | This floaty ring is the best thing ever! Now I'll be safe and sound even if I can't swim...Huh! Ah! Don't let go! I'm still practicing! |
Awakening 4 | Huh? There's something in the lake! What in the world is that? It's like a small, floaty umbrella! I've never seen anything so cool! |
Awakening 5 | Dan-da-dan~! Now I can swim all by myself! I got my floaty ring, and I know Laila's always watching over me, so I know I'll be A-okay! Come to think of it, can you swim, m'lord? If you ask nicely, Moddey here might just be able to teach you! |
Awakening 6 | Thank you, m'lord! We had so much fun playing in the water together. I can barely remember I was even scared of it. To show my appreciation, I'll be sure to take care of you a whooole lot more from now on, okay? Hehehe! |
Victory | Hah hah~! Piece of cake! ...Huh? N-No! Anything but water... Anything!! |
Defeat | Oh nooo... There's a hole in my floaty ring...! |
Skill 1 | You. Big. DUMMY!! |
