With my heart filled with determination, I took my first step into the ravaged world. To search this vast land for the one and only Successor...- Illya
Illya is a girl tasked to deliver the Staff of Tikkun to The Successor - the Duke of Fran - and is the first player the player meets in MementoMori.
First raised as a rule who would protect the weak, Illya's life took a tragic turn when she lost her family under mysterious circumstancess, leaving her as the sole survivor. However, she found solace and purpose under the care of Pope Elfriede, who taught her the power of kindness toward others. When the Pople was about to be possesed by a demon, she gave Illya the Staff of Tikkun, and a mission to find The Successor who will save the world from impending doom caused by Curses.
After searching across the continent of Adria and witnessing the devastation caused by the Curses firsthand, Illya found the Duke of Fran, the successor chosen by the Staff of Tikkun. The Staff of Tikkun not only gave him the power to strengthen witches under The Duke's command, but it also cleansed the Witches of Qlipha - who had caused the Curses.
But, I'm sure he'll look at me with those gentle eyes and say, 'Your life is more precious to me than the world.' Ah.. yes... If I heard such wonderful words from him, it might make me just want to abandon the world.- Illya
But Illya discovered that the Staff did not dispel the Curses, but instead sealed them away within her. Once all 10 Curses had been gathered within her body, it would end in disaster for the world. This made Illya resolve to use the power of God's miracle, a power she was born with, to destroy herself along with the Curses. That was the plan, at least.
But as Illya fought with The Duke and her fellow witches through the ruined nations of Adria, her resolve began to wane. She was enjoying her journey with them, and she did not wish to say goodbye just yet.
Eventually, The Duke and his witches defeated the possesed Pope Elfriede and rid her of the 10th and final Curse. However, the moment Illya absorbed this Curse, a dark plan came to light: the demons were waiting for the Curses to converge in one place, and they were going to use Illya as a vessel to revive the Demon Lord.
Despite initially planning to sacrifice herself, however, Illya ultimately refused to say goodbye.
The Demon Lord remained sealed within Illya, but she also became the Witch of Qlipha who bore the number 0, and she would have to travel to the Underworld and find the demon's throne to seal him away before it's too late.
A dutiful young girl who holds a high regard for the Duke's abilities. She is perceived by most as bright, upbeat, and nurturing, which encourages the witches they take in to open their hearts.
She is very loyal to the Duke. This loyalty and admiration manifests as a dream she now shares with him to save the world.
But while Illya is full of praise for her companions, she is not so complimentary of herself. Beneath her gentle smiles and cheery words is a girl beset by anxiety. She believes that they, mainly herself, as those with the role of saving the world, must suffer and that the fun times they experience are merely fleeting moments of respite.
She does, however, go to considerable measures to ensure the Duke and her companions' physical and emotional well-being—possibly as a result of a hypocritical conflict between her mind and heart. In a similar vein, she hides her apprehensions from others, bottling them up and locking them away deep in her heart. However, she takes great comfort and solace in the knowledge that the Duke was able to perceive her inner turmoil and ultimately puts it aside for the time being.
She constantly worries about her weight despite being unable to stop herself from eating sweets.
Even after the 11th Curse awakens inside Illya's body, she manages to retain most of her old personality. But she starts to become noticeably more whimsical, honest, and even aloof.
Her new persona is almost entirely molded around her loyalty, gratitude, and affection for the Duke. She even completely dissociates herself from their mission to save the world, choosing instead to only carry it out on his behalf.
Yet, even with Illya's altered personality, she is still greatly troubled by her weight.

| The world has been destroyed. A country incinerated by hellfire. A kingdom consumed by crystals. An empire purged by the Tree of Life. These calamities—known as "Curses"— appeared without warning and laid waste to every single nation. But, I refuse to let that stop me. Because above all else, as the one entrusted with the "Staff" by Her Holiness, I don't want to lose anyone important to me ever again. With my heart filled with determination, I took my first step into the ravaged world. To search this vast land for the one and only "Successor." |

| "Be a ruler who can protect the weak." That was the lesson I learned from my parents. But, I failed to live up to what they taught me. I lost everything, and was the only one left alive. I fell into despair, but the one who saved me was Her Holiness, the Pope. Everyone has a small glimmer of light inside them. When they're happy. When they're having fun. When they've met the one they love. That light fills their hearts with warmth. And there's someone who can take their own light and share it with everyone. Someone whose kindness towards others can illuminate anyone's path. That person was Her Holiness. |

| One day, Her Holiness called me into the deepest part of the cathedral. There are two relics that have existed since the beginning of the Church of Longinus's 2000-year history. The Baptismal Fire that was bestowed by God—the "Lance of Longinus." The Divine Oak that descended from Heaven—the "Staff of Tikkun." These two sacred treasures—said to awaken when the world comes to an end—were now in the hands of Her Holiness. "I am not long for this world." A black infestation begins to spread throughout Her Holiness's body. "Find the 'Successor' of the Staff. The fate of the world is at stake." She held the Staff out to me, but I couldn't accept it. After all, I couldn't even save my homeland, so the idea of me saving the world was... As I stood there trembling, Her Holiness gently smiled at me. "There is no need to worry. I have absolute faith that you can do it." |

| And so, I set foot on my journey to search for the "Successor." Soon after that, the "Curses" engulfed the world. As I wander from one country to the next, all the worries I had bottled up begin crawling back into my mind. If I don't find the Successor, the world will truly be destroyed. The fate of the world depends on me... Her Holiness told me not to worry, but even if I searched every corner of the world, that doesn't mean I can meet every single person out there. I don't even know what kind of person the "Successor" is to begin with... What if I was unable to meet them? What if I did, but didn't know? What if...they've already fallen victim to the Curses...? ...No! Do not lose heart! Because this time... This time, I will protect everyone with my own two hands...! If I don't, then what would be the point of everything I've done until now...? I'm the only one— the only one who can do this... |

| The world's already being destroyed. That's what I learned throughout this journey. The Curses encroached upon the land, overrunning it with creatures I've never seen before. Nowhere was safe. But, people were still living. After experiencing pain, sadness, the loss of loved ones, despair that plunged their worlds into darkness... they discovered light inside themselves. Someone's kindness, a smile they remember, bright memories of a loved one—everyone had a gentle light shining through the despair in their hearts. That's right. The world hasn't been destroyed just yet. As long as someone keeps another close to their heart, that light will never die! This world can't help but tremble as it stands on its last legs, and that's why it can't help but shine. The waning flame inside of me began burning bright red once more. |

| The very last place I visited was Fran— the country of flowers. I couldn't find the Successor anywhere else, so that means they must be here... But, what if they aren't here, either? That very thought terrifies me. At this point though, there's just no more time to search through the entire world again... I pray as I take my first step inside Fran's largest city. And then... ...Ah. There's no mistake about it. With a light so warm and gentle, that person is undoubtedly the one chosen by the Staff—the Successor. The real journey to save the world starts now. But, I'm not worried. I already know that as long as people keep others in their hearts, light will never vanish from the world. "Nice to meet you. I know this is sudden, but would you like to join me in saving the world?" |

| When we started our journey and dispelled the Curse of flowers, I felt something strange inside me. The moment the entire Curse was dispelled from the country of Fran, I realized what had happened. The Curse wasn't dispelled. It was only sealed away inside of me. After every Curse has converged into me, I'm sure that in the end, I'll... There are 10 Curses destroying the world, and it's impossible for them all to be sealed away inside a single person. But, there's one secret I've been hiding. When I was a child, I was called the child of miracles. Everyone said I was born with the power of God, capable of performing His miracle only once. I'm afraid of dying. But, knowing that my life can save the world provided with me with a little bit of solace. That's why, it wasn't dying that I was afraid of—it was the idea of dying without being able to use this power. |

| To save the world, I thought our journey would be full of pain and hardships. It's unforgivable to have fun while saving the world. We have to undergo the pain and hardships. But...with those gentle eyes of his, he noticed how I was changing for the worse. Then, a trial that was meant for me to face alone became something shared by the two of us. Half of my pain disappeared, then the next thing I knew, it was completely gone. With him and so many friends lending me their hands, this journey of pain and hardships turned into one full of fun and joy. Our journey will one day come to an end. That's something I should've known all along. And yet...right now... Still lacking the strength to say goodbye, the end of our journey appeared right before my very eyes. |

| Inside a large crater lies the altar of sealing. There, we save Her Holiness from the demon controlling her, and the power of the Staff purges the final Curse. At last, the world is saved...! ...No, something's off. Why was it so easy? Don't tell me...the demons were waiting for every Curse to be dispelled...? For every Curse to converge into one place...? There are only 10 Witches of Qlipha in the world, and each one possesses the power of a guardian angel. When such power to protect the world inverts, it becomes a power that destroys—a "Curse." That means, to take away a Curse... is to take away a "power to protect the world..." Suddenly, a power taking the shape of ominous, piercing spikes pours out from me. I hear Her Holiness cry out in dread. "An 11th Curse...?! But...such a thing should not exist...!" The altar of sealing shatters, and something enters my body. |

| The angels of old lose their power, their seals broken, allowing for the advent of the demon lord. My body, reshaped by the 10 Curses, becoming his vessel. But, demons are inherently cunning, and arrogant all the same. The demon lord begins to resurrect. The 10 seals have been broken, leaving the 11th inside me. It was a miracle that shouldn't exist— the result of demons' schemes and angels' deception. ...A black key that turns souls into prisons. It all finally dawned upon me. I wield the power of God, and can perform His miracle only once. That power was for this very moment. |

| Long ago, the demon lord tried to destroy the world. With his overwhelming power, the angels could do nothing but seal him away. That very same demon lord is inside me, but he has yet to regain all his strength. Now's the time to use my life to save the world. I turned to meet those familiar, gentle eyes for one last time. I was only able to make it this far because you were always there for me. So, I want to say thank you. ...Goodbye. A light as pure as snow begins to pour out from within me. This single miracle can make my wish— my final wish—come true. To use my life to save the world. And yet... Where did I go wrong...? I thought I was ready for this to happen, but... Hey... Please... I beg you... Save me...! I knew it was wrong to have fun saving the world. At the very last second, I was too weak to wish for peace to come to the world... Then, the miracle made my wish come true. |

Until now, I wasn't afraid... But... If only I'd been oblivious to everything, then I could've easily saved the world. Now, I'm trembling as I walk. Smiling desperately so I don't break. But one day, I'll be at the end of my rope. When that happens, can I hang on to being myself...? Once I'm there at the demons' throne, what is it that I'll wish for...? |

You knew what you truly wanted, so why are you hesitating now? ...He's trying to save the world. So, I'll do the same. Not for the world, but for him. But, I'm sure he'll look at me with those gentle eyes and say, "Your life is more precious to me than the world." ...Ah...yes... If I heard such wonderful words from him, it might make me just want to abandon the world. After all, there's a secret I've been hiding. The power of God is hidden away in someone who shouldn't exist— the foolish Witch of Qlipha who bears the number 0. That is who I am. |
