"I've failed so many times, yet she still treats me kindly..."- Potpourri
Potpourri is a young resident of a hidden witch village, who has the powers to turn her words into reality. However, she has trouble controlling her powers and often causes disasters she did not mean to, which leads to her being an outcast among the villagers. She was told by many to just keep her mouth shut so she wouldn't cause any accidents.
Despite being a loose cannon who could conjure up a pillar of fire or a freezing blizzard just by saying a few words, there was one person who always believed in her and never lost faith—her teacher.
Even though she repeatedly failed attempts at controlling her powers, her teacher would always encourage her to do better. One day, she gave Potpourri a hat, which she said was a magic hat that could give her extra courage and confidence. Even though Potpourri didn't believe it was a magic hat, she was very grateful to receive her first-ever gift. That day, she vocally thanked her teacher, and it was the first time she'd talked to anyone in so long, given her worries about accidentally misusing her powers.
It turns out that the hat did affect her, and Potpourri said that whenever she wore it, she felt her teacher's presence beside her, and she felt some weight being taken off of her. Whether it really was a magic hat or it was just a placebo effect, Potpourri definitely found that the hat gave her useful benefits. Potpourri vowed to master her powers and properly thank her teacher afterward.
"I hope you'll continue to watch over me so I can keep my chin up, Teacher..."- Potpourri
One day while practicing her powers, Potpourri heard screams and sensed that something terrible was happening. One of the witches scrambled inside looking for her, and then frantically told her to use her powers to wipe out the humans. "The village is in your hands now" she said.
Potpourri was scared, doubting that she could finally get it right and conjure up the right attack to wipe out the humans, and not harm her fellow villagers. Her teacher finally noticed her, hugged her, and told her that it was okay, and that she didn't have to fight. While this was happening, Potpourri was pushed away by her teacher, and she heard a gunshot. As she hesitantly looked back, she saw her teacher slumped on the floor.
As she watched her teacher take her dying breaths, Potpourri's hat covered her eyes, and her teacher whispered: "Stand up. Believe in yourself... Have the courage...to believe..." Potpourri focused and conjured up a whirlwind that carried away all the hostile humans, leaving all the villagers unharmed.
She did it. She finally harnessed her powers the way she intended, but that didn't bring her teacher back. "Didn't I tell you? You can do anything you set your mind to, Potpourri." she heard. She thought she heard her teacher, but when she looked back, she found that nobody was there. While she blamed herself for not acting quickly, she knew that wallowing in regret would only make her teacher worry, and that would make it so that she could not rest well. Her teacher's body may be gone, but she continues to watch over Potpourri through her magic hat.
Potpourri is an anxious and lonely girl. She's extremely quiet and avoids talking as much as possible to prevent any chances of her accidentally conjuring up problems with her powers. She's very closed off given how everybody was scared to be her friend, but her teacher's love and guidance have finally allowed her to control her powers, believe in herself, and give her confidence.

Chapter 1 |
---|
"B-Burn." As I uttered this, a blazing pillar of fire pierced the sky... only to extinguish before my eyes. Hah...another failure I harness the power of words. Whatever I say becomes reality. If I say, "Burn," a fire erupts. If I say, "Freeze," there'll be a blizzard. The other villagers were overjoyed to discover my power. "To conjure anything and bend reality to your will... Your potential is limitless," they said. But, I couldn't control it... Even if I imagined a small campfire, I would summon an overwhelming blaze. Any useful power becomes useless unless you can master it. If anything, one as boundless as mine only becomes a looming threat. ...Maybe I should just keep quiet like the others say." |
Chapter 2 |
---|
I messed up again today. Down in the dumps, I wandered aimlessly until I felt a firm clasp on my shoulder. The only person who'd do that is... "How's it going, Potpourri?" I was right! It was Teacher...! She was usually busy teaching the other children, but she still made time to talk to me. But... She's a littleー no, a really strange person. I've failed so many times, yet she still treats me kindly... "Hey, cheer up! What's with the long face?" &uot;I believe in you. So, you can do it!" There it is again... her misplaced faith in me. She really is strange." |
Chapter 3 |
---|
On a day like any other, Teacher said this to me. "Potpourri, you can do anything you set your mind to. You just need some more confidence... or maybe try lightening up a little?" That stung a bit...but she wasn't wrong. "All you need is the courage to believe in yourself. Why not give it a whirl while thinking, 'I can do this!'?" Easier said than done... I'm still scared of my power. How could I ever believe in myself...? It was then that she placed her hat on my head. "Here. This is a magic hat. With this on, you'll be practically bursting with extra courage and confidence!" A magic hat? I was too old to believe in things like that anymore. But...I'd never received a gift before. "Th-Thank you very much, Teacher." It'd been so long since I'd spoken to anyone... my voice was trembling. " |
Chapter 4 |
---|
My teacher really was telling the truth. When I wear the hat, it's like she's right there beside me... Almost as if my nerves are melting away. Not all of them, but I do feel like some weight's being lifted. Well, it's not like I'd ever tell her... I mean, she'd never let me live it down if I did. But one day, when I'm able to master my magic... I'd like to thank her properly. Right as I was getting lost in my thoughts, I heard shouts outside my house. What was going on? Fearfully creaking the door open, I saw armor-clad humans fighting witches. Screams and curses echoed throughout the air, as if our village had become a battlefield... I knew I had to run, but my body was frozen. Someone, anyone...! "Potpourri, are you there?!" Did someone actually come to help me...? Scrambling into my house, one of the other witches locked eyes with me and pleaded. "Quickly, wipe out the humans with your power. The village is in your hands now."" |
Chapter 5 |
---|
Stepping outside, at least a dozen villagers and humans alike were sprawled across the ground, unmoving. A-At this rate, we'll all be... I-I have to act now...! But, can I actually do anything? All of my previous attempts to use my power have failed. What if I end up hurting everyone...? "It's alright Potpourri." Teacher... I felt her warm embrace and my worries began to fade away. quot; You don't have to fight. You're fine the way you are. Stay kind..." But then, there was a sudden flash of light from afar... "Potpourri, watch out!" She pushed me away, and a gunshot rang out behind me... Teacher...? I slowly forced myself to turn and look, only to see her slumped on the floor. ...I-It's all my fault. All because I didn't use my power...!" |
Chapter 6 |
---|
"Teacher...! No, please don't go, not now!" Her labored breaths grew more and more shallow... "Potpourri, you can..." With the last of her strength, she placed her hand on my cheek. She whispered in my ear as her eyelids slowly fluttered shut. The brim of my hat suddenly slumped over my eyes, as if it was telling me not to look if I couldn't bear to. Maybe it would've been easier that way. But, my teacher's words kept ringing in my head. "Stand up." "Believe in yourself... Have the courage...to believe..." I gently reached for my hat. The magic hat that always gave me strength. My precious treasure filled with my teacher's hopes for me... Please, lend me your power once more. Pulling my hat down, I took a deep breath." |
Chapter 7 |
---|
I'd never once succeeded in taming my power, and I might just fail again. But, my teacher told me... to believe in myself. So I...! I'll believe in myself! "Blow them away! A small tornado descended onto the village, taking only the humans as it blustered off. I...I really did it? Didn't I tell you? You can do anything you set your mind to, Potpourri. "Teacher...?" Thinking I heard her voice, I turned, but no one was there. She just lay quietly, growing colder by the second. If only I had acted quicker... she could still be alive right now...! But I know... I can't just wallow in my tears forever. If I did that, she'd only worry more... and be unable to rest. "Thank you, for always having faith in me... Because of you, I'm now able to believe in myself." I'm still weak, and I'm sure there'll be times when I falter again. But, I hope you'll continue to watch over me so I can keep my chin up, Teacher... |
