“Rustica, what is it that you wish for?”- Aura
Rustica is an orphaned child in a war-torn world where witches and humans are in conflict. Left for dead, Rustica is found and healed by Aura, a kind-hearted witch who can grant wishes by sacrificing her jewelry. Aura's power attracts both those in need and those driven by greed.
Rustica, initially cynical, is moved by Aura's selfless actions and decides to protect her. Aura, despite being repeatedly exploited, remains optimistic and continues to help others, believing that her actions can inspire others to do the same. In a desperate act, Aura sacrifices her own life force to heal a diseased village, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to helping people. Rustica, witnessing Aura's sacrifice and the resulting joy of the villagers, realizes that the world might not be as hopeless as she initially believed and resolves to continue supporting Aura's dream.
“Why is it always the kindest souls that get hurt?!”- Rustica
One day, Tillie, a girl Aura once healed, brings flowers. Her genuine grief and kindness touch Rustica. When Tillie is attacked protecting Aura's casket, Aura's residual power activates, protecting Tillie. This frees Aura and leaves Rustica without her purpose.
Tillie offers Rustica a chance to travel with her, mirroring Aura's original kindness. Rustica, finding a new purpose in protecting Tillie, decides to live on, promising to join Aura when her time comes.
Chapter 1 |
---|
I can hear angered shouts in the distance... Ah... More looting, I bet... For this country, ravaged by the on-going conflict between witches and humans, stealing to survive is just a matter of course. That's why an orphan like me, dying on the side of the road, is simply ignored. What a good-for-nothing world this is... If I could be reborn, I'd want to be a bird... That way, I could fly somewhere far away from here... ..? Why...does my face feel wet...? When I opened my eyes, I was surrounded by a halo of golden light, and a girl with blue eyes was crying over me. Was what I felt just now her tears...? "I won't let you die...!" The words the girl spilled along with her tears somehow brought me to tears as well... Maybe this world isn't so bad after all... That was the first time in my life I had ever thought as much. |
Chapter 2 |
---|
The blue-eyed girl, Aura, was not only a witch, but an orphan of war just like me. Until now, she had been helping people she came across in her travels. When I asked how she was helping them, Aura handed me a bracelet inset with a red gemstone. "Rustica, what is it that you wish for?" "I want...a sword..." As the words left my lips, the bracelet emitted the same golden light as before, transforming into a rapier. By sacrificing a piece of jewelry worn on her body for an extended period of time, she could grant any wish. That was Aura's power. It was also why Aura was covered head to toe in jangling jewelry of all sorts. I called her a bagworm, only to get a right hook to the face in response. "My power alone isn't enough to save everyone. But, that doesn't mean I shouldn't still try my best to help people, at least. If the ones I help reach out their hands to others too some day..." Does this self-sacrificing softie not have a hint of skepticism in that brain of hers? Despite her good intentions, all she truly seemed to attract were jewel-hungry thieves. Good grief... She's so naive, there's no way I can leave her alone... Those who learn of Aura's power all get overtaken with greed sooner or later. That's when I'd decided... |
Chapter 3 |
---|
We found ourselves in a village ravaged by a deadly disease, its villagers too poor to buy the medicine or rations to fight it. "Aura, you've already used up all your jewelry, so there's nothing else we can... Aura...?" "If I stretch the definition of what counts for my power...!" As she muttered this, she slid a knife across her palm. With no time to stop her, a wealth of golden light shot forth from her hand, enveloping the entire village in its glow. When the light faded, the ailing villagers began to rise from their sickbeds one after another. Don't tell me...she healed everyone...?! Her face white as a sheet, Aura turned to face me and flashed a smile. Good grief... As the drained Aura was offered a chance to stay until she recovered by the villagers, I felt myself break into a smile. Your dream just got a little closer to becoming reality, Aura. |
Chapter 4 |
---|
Kuh...! We're finally out of that village...! I need to hurry and get Aura far away from here...! Those scum...! Feeding me lies that it was just taking her longer to recover...! With no jewelry left, they used her power by force...! Aura was drained thin, covered in wounds across her entire body. Even her hair has been cut this short... And, her eyes...! "Rustica... Is that you...?" "Yeah, it's me... I'm sorry I didn't make it sooner." "Yes, that's definitely Rustica's voice...! Hehe... Maybe...because I'm so relieved, I feel a bit...sleepy..." "No, Aura! You can't sleep right now...!" "Thank you... for staying with me this whole time... Please..." "I'm the onewho should be thanking you...! You were the only one who ever reached out to me...! I've only made it this long because of you...!" "So, please...! Don't leave me here all alone...!" |
Chapter 5 |
---|
Aura was laid to rest in the casket of glass I'd had made for her. Her corpse remains the same as the day she died. All because...I wished not to be left alone in this world... I saw my face reflected in the glass. Why do I look like I'm about to cry...? Why...am I the only one left alive...?! ...Yeah...This must be my punishment... My punishment for not being able to protect Aura, and for denying her a peaceful rest... I'll accept the hand fate's dealt me... This time, I'll fend off all who try to take Aura. Until the day I breathe my last... I warded off all who came to disturb Aura thereafter. Until the day I pointed my blade at yet another approaching figure in need of a lesson... "I-I came to leave some flowers for her!" Flowers...? Anyone who's ever shown their face here has tried to steal Aura away. But, this girl is different... Seeing the bundle of wildflowers in the girl's hands, I felt tears stream down my cheeks. |
Chapter 6 |
---|
The girl who came to leave flowers for Aura was the very one who had once wished for her ailing grandmother to be cured. "My grandmother died, but I haven't been able to cry at all... I'm a horrible grandchild, aren't I..." The girl's teary expression felt familiar. It was just like my face... reflected in the casket's icy glass... "But, you look like you're on the verge of tears as we speak." "I...do...?" Once my words had sunk in, the floodgates opened, and the girl broke into heaving sobs. When she had wept every last tear, the girl—Tillie— set her bundle of wildflowers atop Aura's casket. The sight gave me a sense of peace, and for the first time in ages, I let down my guard... So much so, I didn't notice the group of humans closing in on Tillie from behind. |
Chapter 7 |
---|
...! Tillie, how could you be so reckless...! Letting yourself get hurt, just to protect Aura...! At this rate, Tillie will...! Why is it always the kindest souls that get hurt?! Aura and this girl are the last people who deserve to die! So, please...! Suddenly, golden light shot out from the glass casket, covering Tillie. Don't tell me... The light that had enveloped Tillie then circled around me... before finally dissipating into the sky. When Tillie opened her eyes, she muttered Aura's name... Just as a I thought... I closed my eyes before the empty casket. Aura is now free...and with her gone, my reason for living is also— "Would you like to travel the world with me?" Opening my eyes once more, Tillie was there, extending her hand up to me. Ahh... It's just like back then. When I met Aura for the first time... Sorry, Aura. I'm going to try living a little longer. Just like with you, I'm going to do everything I can to protect this girl who reached out to me. When everything is over, I'll come join you. So please, just wait a little longer for me... |
Login 1 | ...What, back already? |
---|---|
Login 2 | ...Hey. If you’re going to be gone long, let Tillie know first. She’s been on edge this whole time, wondering when you’d be back. |
Home 1 | I have no intention of getting close to you. My life is devoted to the sole purpose of protecting Tillie. Nothing more, nothing less. |
Home 2 | For a duke, you sure have a lot of time on your hands. Don’t you have anything better to do than exchange pleasantries with me? |
Home 3 | What, this bird? Back in the cemetery, it must’ve mistook me for some kind of statue, perching on my shoulder. But, it hasn’t left my side since. ...Rather than stick with me, you should fly free, and go where you wish. You’re the one with wings, after all... |
Home 4 | What’s with that sorry look on your face? You should already know how long and perilous the path you’ve chosen is. If you’re going to complain now, why not just quit? ...Well, not that I think you’ll listen anyway. |
Home 5 | ...Hey, be a little more cautious, will you? Don’t just trust anyone you meet with a sob story. Just watching you gets on my nerves. Really... You’re like a chick mistaking every bird for its mother. Be more careful about who you trust, alright? I won’t be the one to bail you out if you get hurt some day. You...trust me? Haah... Your ability to win people over certainly resembles Aura, at least... |
Home 6 | The girls around here are all squawking a bit louder today. Did something happen? It’s your birthday? Oh, is that all? Unfortunately for you, I didn’t prepare any gifts. But, I won’t say sorry. Instead, I’ll let you have a sparring match with me. Oh? Don’t be scared. I’ll hold back just enough that your life will be spared. So, come on. Take out that staff of yours, great Duke. |
Home 7 | Bubbles that melt all they touch... That Curse was wreaking havoc on my world. Hmph... Well, what happened makes sense to me. A world like that, fraught with nothing but strife, probably deserved to melt away into nothing... But, even in such a good-for-nothing world, there were girls who would stop at nothing to save their friends. Well, not that those girls had it easy or anything... The kindest among us always get hurt the most... |
Home 8 | Tillie, stop pulling my sleeve like that... If there’s something you want to say, just say it. ...Stop being mean to the Duke? I’ve done nothing of the sort. Besides, aren’t you the one who compared me to a cat the other day? Care to explain yourself? ...Cats are cute, so it’s not mean...? ...Good grief. The things you come up with... |
Home 9 | Rean, was it? If you don’t want to lose someone precious to you, it’s vital not to give up—you have to keep moving forward. Hmph... But, can’t put much stock in the words of one who couldn’t even protect their closest friend, now can you...? ...Sorry. I was just talking to myself. Forget I said anything. |
Home 10 | You’re a real gravekeeper, so calling myself as such in front of you leaves a bad taste in my mouth. A gravekeeper is one who protects the eternal rest of the dead. A self-righteous fool who fears being left alone, so much they deny their only friend a peaceful death, doesn’t count. Someone such as yourself, who buried not only your friends and family, but even those who persecuted you, is far more befitting of the title. |
Home 11 | In my world, there’s a place called the City of Graves. It’s the final resting place for witches who escaped persecution. Aura rests there as well. If I die, bury me beside her. ...Don’t get any ideas. I said if. And don’t you dare say a word of this to Tillie. A girl her age having to mourn yet another loss... I can’t let that happen. |
Home 12 | Having this many witches stay in your mansion... Did you not stop and think if you had enough food to feed all these girls before reaching out to them? You may be a duke, but surely there’s a limit to your personal assets, right? ...“That’s no reason not to save people”...? Right... I almost forgot that pesky nature of yours for a moment. That you’re as self-sacrificial as martyrs come... |
Awakening 1 | Don’t get any ideas. You’re the one choosing to do this, so don’t expect anything out of me. |
Awakening 2 | I’m fine as I am now. If you’re in the mood to share your power, give it to the others here. |
Awakening 3 | ...My blade is for protecting Tillie. Just because you’re gifting me power doesn’t mean I’ll pay you back. |
Awakening 4 | ...I already told you my blade isn’t for you, but it seems words don’t get through to you. ...It’s a waste of breath to keep repeating myself. Do as you wish. |
Awakening 5 | ...Hey. I told you to do as you wish, but I didn’t tell you to go this far. ...You’re only doing what I said, so I shouldn’t worry about it...? You can be surprisingly stubborn, you know that? |
Awakening 6 | ...The longer you do this, the more I feel like nothing but a common thief... I guess you’ve won me over. I’ll pay you back for all the power you’ve given me out on the battlefield. That’ll make us even, so don’t hold your breath—you won’t get a thank you out of me. |
Victory | Do you really have to get so excited over every little thing? |
Defeat | Tch... Damn it...! Did I let my guard down too much? |
Skill 1 | Join the cemetery’s mist... |
Skill 2 | Burn with the smoke of the pyre...! |
