“I knew it wouldn't change the underlying cause of our suffering.”- Milla
Milla lives in a barren region where food is scarce and rationed. Despite the hardship, people are optimistic about the future. However, as food shortages worsen, tension rises in the village. She tries to lift spirits by singing but is met with the harsh reality of the situation.
The village chief announces a drastic plan to reduce the population due to lack of food. Milla defies the chief, vowing to find food for everyone or face banishment. After days of searching with little success, the she faces starvation and the temptation to consume the food they found.
“Please, make this a world where no one needs to be sacrificed...”- Village Chief
Milla's heart pounded with hope as she ventured into the perilous East, determined to find sustenance for her starving village. Returning triumphant with bountiful provisions, her joy was swiftly eclipsed by a chilling reality. Her home, once a haven of unity, was now a shadow of its former self, ravaged by a secret horror. The villagers, driven to the brink by hunger, had resorted to a cruel and unthinkable act of survival, culling their own to ensure the survival of the remaining.
Overwhelmed by grief and guilt, Milla found solace in the broken remnants of her community. Transforming her despair into a beacon of hope, she dedicated herself to nourishing both body and soul, envisioning a future where such darkness would never again consume their lives.
Milla is a friendly and relaxed person who gets along well with others. She travels from place to place playing guitar. She really enjoys eating and is often seen with food.
Chapter 1 |
---|
The place I lived was a largely barren region where it was especially difficult to grow anything. Food was rationed. There were days when the food we received was less, but everyone was optimistic. Peace had been restored to Emeria at last, so no one would have to suffer anymore. Everyone was full of hope, believing that from now on, we would all help one another. But, as the rations we received slowly grew smaller and smaller, the atmosphere of the village began to change... The air turned tense, like a loose string on a guitar being slowly pulled tighter. Wanting to lighten the mood, I often sang together with the other kids in the village. I knew it wouldn't change the underlying cause of our suffering. But, I couldn't just watch and do nothing... |
Chapter 2 |
---|
One night, the village chief made an unbelievable declaration. "As our fields were burned to ash by demons, we no longer have enough food for everyone. That's why..." The village chief's words fell into a barely audible mumble. I caught on as soon as I saw his darkened expression. That he meant to lower the number of mouths to feed. In the tense air, the adults slowly turned their gazes towards the old and sick... "You said we would all help one another! Things are finally peaceful, so why...?! ..Then, I'll go out and gather food myself! If I can't find any, you can just banish me!" Everyone tried to calm my stubborn outburst. But, since they'd all used the last of their energy that morning, they soon just let me go. I have to hurry and find food for all of us somehow...! |
Chapter 3 |
---|
A few days had passed since I'd left the village. But, I'd only managed to gather enough food for two people. This'll barely make a dent...! I have to get more... But, how...? Maybe because I haven't eaten in two days, I can barely think...and I'm so hungry...! "If you're that hungry, why not just eat what you've found?" Nrgh, no! This is for everyone...! "You'll be the one banished if you go back like this, y'know. Should you really be worrying about others right now?" As though someone were whispering in my ear, bad thoughts floated into my head one after another. My stomach let out a loud grumble. Its constant rumbling gnawed away at both my reason and soul. I was suddenly overcome with the fear that I would become someone else, so... I began to hum a tune. It was the song I'd often sung together with the other kids in the village. |
Chapter 4 |
---|
There should still be vegetation left in Emeria's East. I'm sure of it. Since getting there and back'll take several days, I'll have to leave everyone waiting a bit longer... But, it's better than not bringing anything to them at all! Clinging to that sliver of hope, I wandered through eastern towns and Armed Force bases. After searching far and wide... I was able to head back to the village in a carriage full of food! Everyone was shocked at my return, but were over the moon to see me! We had a grand feast that day, just like it was a festival! At everyone's request, I even played a song on my guitar. The villagers all cheered along to my performance! In the midst of the festivities, I didn't even notice the sad, downcast faces among the crowd... |
Chapter 5 |
---|
My second journey to the east was a success. I'll have great news for everyone when I get back! The Armed Forces said they'd take in the people of our village in one of their bases in the east! Supplying food for a village of our size wouldn't be a problem, so as long as we're okay with it, they'll let us stay there! It'll be sad to leave our home, but now there'll be no need to consider things like lowering the number of mouths to feed! But, when I entered the village, it was eerily silent. Like everyone had disappeared... Timidly knocking on the village chief's door, the chief's grandchild appeared from inside. Thank goodness...! But, my relief was short-lived. The grim foreboding I'd felt quickly transferred to the letter the child handed to me. |
Chapter 6 |
---|
The village chief's letter was full of repentance and regret. "Milla, I'm sorry. Before you returned, I had colluded with a few others in exiling a number of villagers. After that, we were overtaken by greed, believing that the more people we eliminated, the more we would be able to eat." "We spent our days culling one person at a time, before quickly deliberating who to get rid of next. But, when we saw you singing with your face so gaunt, we suddenly felt deeply ashamed. It was clear you had not succumbed to the same desires we had all fallen prey to. We would likely only have continued to elect others to sacrifice." "Humans who become like demons have no right to live. That's why, for all those involved in the culling, I... The future of this village is in the hands of those who remain. Please, make this a world where no one needs to be sacrificed..." The rest of the letter was illegible... So, I couldn't read any more... |
Chapter 7 |
---|
If I'd only come back sooner, I could've saved the chief and the others. If I was just...a little faster...! As I was overcome with regret from my own powerlessness, the remaining villagers gently comforted me. "They may be gone, but the fact that we're still alive is all thanks to you, Milla." "The food you brought back that day was so warm and tasty, it brought me back to my senses." I began to tear up at their words. Bringing the bowl of soup I'd been gently handed to my lips, I slowly took a sip. "...! It's delicious...!" As tears flowed down my cheeks, I felt myself break into a smile. Even though peace has returned to the world, tragedy still remains. But, there are things that can pull us out from the darkness. That's what I want to give people. Warm, delicious meals that soothe one's body and heart! I know the difference it makes is small. But, when our bodies and hearts become full, the peaceful world we wished for will finally begin. That's why it's my goal. So I'll work hard for the day I can finally welcome a warm world full of satisfied bellies and hearts—! |
