If you're new to MementoMori, then you may want to understand how combat works in the game. Read on to find out how fights work in-game, and how the different stats affect the outcome of each fight.

Since Memento Mori is an AFKRPG, all battles that happen in-game are automatic and turn-based. You don't need to control and command your witches to do anything; they'll take care of things on their own. This is especially the case with the Skills they'll use - which also determines which enemies or allies they'll target.
The game determines who gets to strike first depending on the individual SPD (or 'Speed') stat of the units involved. If your witches have higher SPD stats than the enemy, then they'll have a higher probability of attacking or using their skills first. SPD becomes very important, especially in the late game, where enemies can one-shot your entire party and your only chance of winning is one-shotting them first.
Battle Power, or BP for short, is a number that indicates how much raw power a certain witch has depending on her stats. In general, the higher your party's overall BP, the bigger the chance that you'll win a battle. But this is not always the case.
There will be times when your party will be beaten by an enemy despite you having a higher BP than them. This is because of things like certain witch's skills (Soltina, for example, can make herself very hard to kill because of her passive, and this may just allow her to kill the rest of your Party), the enemy having higher SPD stats than yours, team synergy, or plain bad luck.
So keep in mind that simply stuffing together characters with high BP into the same party will not cut it. You'll need to make sure that your charactes' skills complement each other, and that they have specific stat advantages over the enemy. This is especially important in PvE, since enemy parties will eventually outpace your party in terms of levels, and winning battles will boil down to who has the highest SPD and can deal the most amount of damage in the shortest amount of time.
Fighting in MementoMori usually is determined not by your raw BP, but by the kinds of witches you bring along to the fight and where you place them. Currently, the best party composition is to get one DPS witch plus four other witches that provide support.
So if you're fighting against a boss that heals their allies or increases their Defense, you will want to bring along a support witch that can nullify healing and/or make sure your DPS witch's DEF Break stat is pumped as much as you can.
Also, your positioning is important because certain witch skills are determined by who they're next to or what's in front of them. The most famous example of this is Merlyn and her Passive Skill 'Apprentice Wanted!' which increases the CRIT Chance of the witch next to her. The problem is that you can't tell whether she'll give this buff to someone above or below her in a formation, so it's best to put her at the very top next to your main DPS witch (like Florence).
Each witch in Memento Mori has a certain set of Skills that they'll use in battle. These Skills can have different conditions as to how they work and who they hit. However, with how the game works, some skills may or may not activate at all, which makes the Witch who uses them less useful than other witches.
For example, the witch Hathor has a passive skill called 'Dreaming Dancer' that increases her ATK if she hasn't taken damage for two turns - which is highly unlikely to happen, especially in the later stages of the game (though Hathor still has other useful skills). On the other hand, the witch Florence's Active Skill 'Scarlet Shimmer' increases the number of attacks she deals with every Critical Hit she lands, which is highly likely to happen especially if you pair her with Merlyn.
Also, while R witches have 3 skills, SR witches have 4 skills, so they outclass those witches by default since they have one more skill to affect the odds of battle.
Witches in MementoMori come in three different classes - Warriors, Snipers, and Sorcerers. Warriors and Snipers deal Physical damage, while Sorcerers deal Magical damage.
Each witch also has four stats that determine their effectiveness in a given battle. These are Strength, Dexterity, Magic, and Stamina.
STR or Strength increases your witch's P. DEF (Physical Defense) and ACC (Accuracy) sub-stats. This is also the stat that scales with a Warrior-Type Witch's ATK (Attack) stat. So the higher their STR, the higher their ATK. ATK also affects the damage of certain Skills.
DEX or Dexterity meanwhile affects a character's EVD (Evade) and CRIT (Critical) sub-stats. This is also the stat that scales with a Sniper-Type Witch's ATK.
As for MAG (Magic), this is the stat that affects M. DEF (Magic Defense) and Debuff ACC (Debuf ACC). Debuff ACC determines the chance to inflict an enemy with a skill's debuff.
Finally, STA (Stamina) determines your witch's HP and CRIT RES (Critical Resistance). CRIT RES determines the chances of whether or not an attack on your witch will be a critical hit or not.
STA is an important stat for any character, while deciding whether to focus on either STR, DEX, or MAG will depend on the type of witch you're trying to strengthen. How do you increase these stats? Through Awakening your witches and using the right Equipment.
While Awakening witches (using copies of characters to increase their rarity and level cap) is the primary way to make your units more powerful, getting the right Gear becomes more and more important as leveling up your characters slows down.
Not only does the proper Gear increase your witch's stats, but attaching the proper Runes to your gear, Augmenting it, and Reforging it can turn your character from a so-so unit to something great.
Runes are these gems that you attach to pieces of Gear, and they increase certain sub-stats like ATK, STA, MAG, ACC, etc. However, as you progress through the game, you'll find that the most important runes are the ones that increase SPD and PM. DEF BREAK. PM. DEF BREAK can drastically improve the damage you deal to enemies, which is important since you'll often have to one-shot entire enemy parties before they can one-shot you.
Augmenting equipment meanwhile unlocks even more sub-stat bonuses in your gear by using Dark and Holy Equipment and/or Perfume. This means not only will your Chest armor increase your DEF, but it'll also boost your DEF BREAK stat.
The most important pieces of equipment we recommend to Augment are the Chest armor (Dark Items to increase its DEF BREAK Bonus), Gloves (Holy Items to increase CRIT DMG or Critical Damage), and your Weapon (Holy Items to increase its ATK percentage scaling).
Last, but not the least, Reforging your items gives them random stat boosts for the four main stats. If you want to increase the DEX Bonus of your Sniper-type Witch's gun, you can Reforge it until it gives you the right stat boost. However, we only recommend doing this once you start getting unique Gear Sets for your witches, since reforged stats don't carry over after being fused with other equipment.
