“They didn't come today, but I'm sure they'll be back for me tomorrow... right?”- Moineau
The girl who would call herself "Moineau" was sold to a secret guild of assassins. Though her parents promised they would come back for her one day, they never did, only leaving her a single silver coin. Years later, hardened by countless killings, she still clings to that coin. Though outwardly numb and able to feel no physical pain, Moineau is still haunted by the broken promise it represents.
Repeated nightmares reopen a stitched wound on Moineau's side, reminding her of that abandonment. She finishes one assassination, tries - and fails - to throw the coin away, and convinces herself that she will discard it after her next job.
“Such an irritating girl. She kept prattling on and on about things I didn't ask her about. About how excited she was to meet the manor's new butler—to meet me.”- Moineau
The "next job" in question is to kill a nobleman's daughter named Evelyn and make it look accidental.
Disguised as a butler, Moineau finds Evelyn grating at first, but she is soon disarmed by the girl's innocent chatter about family, pets, and the hope that her parents will come to see her soon. Multiple subtle murder attempts (poisoned tea, etc.) fail; Evelyn always survives.
At this point, Moineau suspects that Evelyn is also a witch - a scandalous liability for a noble household. No wonder her parents left her, just like with Moineau.
On the night of a full moon, Moineau tries a direct strike, but her blade shatters against an unseen protective force around Evelyn, and the assassin's hand gets nicked instead.
Woken by the commotion, Evelyn tends to the assassin’s cut and says, "Even if there’s no pain, it doesn’t erase the truth that you’ve been hurt." The words pierce the killer’s emotional armor just as more assassins - sent to clean up the failed mission - break in.
Moineau beats the first wave but is badly wounded. Evelyn blames herself for the bloodshed, and in her grief she calls out, accusing some unseen entity of giving her false hope.
This resonates within Moineau and her own childhood despair over broken promises.
Realizing they share the same wound after all, the assassin decides to heal it instead of deepening it. She kneels, presses the silver coin into Evelyn’s hand, and vows: "Please wait here. I will surely come back for you. This is the proof of my promise."
In an act of protection, Moineau calls her former target "My Lady" and stands to face the incoming killers, embracing - for the first time - the pain that proves she is still alive and capable of keeping a promise.
Moineau masks a wounded heart behind the precise, almost mechanical composure of a seasoned killer and a professional butler.
Trained to feel no pain and taught that affection is a liability, she moves through the world with icy efficiency, quick pragmatism, and curt speech - yet the single silver coin she can't throw away reveals a child still waiting to be reclaimed underneath multiple layers of forced stoicism.
So, the smallest echo of a lost promise pierces her armor and rouses an unexpected empathy. In this case, it happened to be another abandoned witch: Evelyn.
| Chapter 1 |
|---|
| "Of course, we'll come back for you. This is the proof of our promise..." I was then handed a single silver coin. I raised my head to look up at my parents— And what unfolded before me was the same, familiar ceiling. Another dream about the past... Wiping the sweat off my brow, there were also traces of blood. The stitches on my wound must have opened up. I don't feel pain. I'm what they call...a witch. That's why I was brought to this shady organization that trains assassins. I pulled the silver coin from my pocket and held it up towards the ceiling, where it glimmered in the moonlight. I could still recall the warmth of my mother and father's embrace from that day. The sound of their gentle laughter. We'll be a family again soon. They promised me, after all... They didn't come today, but I'm sure they'll be back for me tomorrow...right? |
| Chapter 2 |
|---|
| I wiped my blade clean and tossed it into the ocean... Another job done. Standing before the sea in the dead of night, I pulled out that silver coin. What had caused me immeasurable pain to even look at in days past, now evoked nothing within me. In that case, I should be able to get rid of this coin. But, why can't I bear to part with it? They were the ones who threw me away. So, I should just...! ...I'll scrap it after my next job. All of these worthless sentiments, memories... this proof of a promise. Every last thing...! |
| Chapter 3 |
|---|
| Take out a nobleman's daughter and make it look like an accident. That's my next job. Killing a young lady still on the mend... It must be something serious. Maybe a love affair gone wrong, or some other sordid reason. No point in thinking too much. All I have to do is carry out the work I've been given. I made my way to the manor disguised as a butler, and the nobleman's daughter introduced herself as "Evelyn." Such an irritating girl. She kept prattling on and on about things I didn't ask her about. About how excited she was to meet the manor's new butler— to meet me. About her family. About her beloved younger sister. About the little bird she received on her birthday. "When I get better, my parents will come to take me back home." At those words, a breath caught in my throat. Don't let her notice your unease. Just spit out some trite words that sound nice. Agh, god dammit... "I do hope the lord and lady come back for you soon." I think I'm going to be sick. |
| Chapter 4 |
|---|
| This morning, the girl— who was supposed to have drunk poisoned tea— appeared to be perfectly fine. That didn't work either, huh? This is getting strange... Could it be that this girl is a witch too? If so, that would explain everything. Including the reason why she was left alone here. Having a witch in the family— even just the suspicion of it— is enough to cause a scandal. Especially in noble society, where reputation is everything. Which means, that girl... She was in the manor's garden, burying her little pet bird that suddenly died this morning. "It was twittering so cheerfully just yesterday." she said, attempting to muster up a smile. I must admit, I felt a twinge of pity for her in that moment. ...Don't let her get to you. As per the organization's final warning, I need to finish this job by the next full moon. Well, if I can't make it look like an accident, there's only one option left. |
| Chapter 5 |
|---|
| The girl's sleeping face, illuminated by the full moon, appeared so blissfully carefree. At the very least, I'd make it quick and painless so she wouldn't suffer long. I took the knife in my hand and brought it down in one swift motion. Just before the knife could pierce her body, I felt something stop me... and the blade shattered into pieces. ...A power that repels harm, huh? No wonder all of my previous assassination attempts had failed. "You can't kill me either, can you?" I must've woken her... Wait. Did she just say "either?" Before I could respond, she pressed the hem of her nightgown against my hand. The white fabric slowly seeped in red. My blade must have nicked me when it shattered. "Don't worry about it. I don't feel pain," I said. The girl looked shocked but quickly averted her gaze. "Even if there's no pain, it doesn't erase the truth that you've been hurt." Those words caused something in my chest to twist and tighten... Suddenly, the sound of glass breaking pierced the air. I sensed the presence of multiple people— Assassins sent by the organization. |
| Chapter 6 |
|---|
| ...I took care of the first round of assassins, but more were sure to come soon. I needed to gather some weapons quickly... But, my vision began to blur... Maybe I'd lost too much blood. Seeing me covered in wounds, the girl burst into tears. She kept saying it was all her fault— my injuries, the little bird's death... Her incoherent words continued to pour out, but my hazy mind could barely grasp anything at all. "If you were just going to abandon me, why did you take that promise?! You only gave me false hope!" And yet, the moment I heard those words, it was almost as if I was looking at my younger self. Clinging to parents' promise waiting endlessly, only to be hurt every time I realized they wouldn't come. Though it caused me so much pain, I continued living because of that very promise. Without it, I would have long since— ...My wounds felt strangely hot, I recognized this sensation. This was...pain. Footsteps approached. Damn it, how was I supposed to make it out in this state...?! "It may not have been very long, but I'll always treasure the time we had spent together. Thank you so much..." As she uttered those words, the girl just smiled softly. |
| Chapter 7 |
|---|
| "You should run," she said. She had a look of acceptance on her face, knowing she was going to the abandoned any way... ...But, that's not what she wants. What she really wants lies in words that only I could tell her. I understood her painfully well since I bore the same wounds. And because of that, I also knew how to mend them... I knelt before her and held out the silver coin. "Please wait here. I will surely come back for you. This is the proof of my promise." She hesitated, but I placed the coin firmly in her hand. "I will not abandon you, my Lady." Her eyes sparkled like stars, as if she was a lost child who had finally found her way home. "Moineau...please, don't get hurt..." ...Ah. The pain that had been so bothersome just moments ago, and now felt most precious. "As you wish, Lady Evelyn." |
| Login 1 | Welcome back, my lord. |
|---|---|
| Login 2 | It has certainly been a while, my lord. Rest assured, the mansion has been well-maintained by Miss Monica and Miss Iris. Please be sure to praise the two of them later—they will certainly be deligted. |
| Home 1 | This mansion is graced by an array of beautiful flowers, is it not? To cherish them all equally without choosing a single speial blossom... you are quite the teaser, my lord. But, perhaps, such conduct is befitting of the master of the country of flowers... Hehe, I am speaking of flowers, of course. |
| Home 2 | ...Ah. Do forgive me, I was merely pondering how I might wield everyone's weapons. As a butler, it is only natural to be proficient in handling all sorts of weaponry. In times of need, I can turn anything—be it silverware—into a weapon, without exception. |
| Home 3 | I am hurt, you say? Ah, pay it no mind. I do not feel any pain at the moment, so there is no need to fret. I am able to control whether or not pain or poison affects me. It is quite convenient. Though, if left unchecked, one of these days I just might die— Hm? "That's enough, just get your wounds treated?" Very well, I will tend to them at once. |
| Home 4 | You appear quite tired, my lord. Please, do not overexert yourself—retire to your chambers if need be. If you were to fall asleep at your desk, I would have no choice but to carry you to bed... Would that be acceptable to you? |
| Home 5 | As you guesed, Moineau is merely an alias. I believe its origin lies in an old nursery rhyme about a bird of some sort. My real name, however, was inspired by the initials of the protagonist from an ovel about seagulls. It was chosen with the hope that I, too, might soar freely like him. As far as telling you my true name I will share it, but only if Lady Evelyn agrees. |
| Home 6 | Happy birthday, my lord. Please, come this way. we have prepared a celebration for you. Everyone did their utmost to make it special, so please be sure to thank them all. And later, do make some time to accept the present that Lady Evelyn and I have prepared for you. |
| Home 7 | Pardon my intrusion, my lord. Is Lady Evelyn... Oh, it appears she is not here either. Just where could she be? It is time for me to brush her hair, too... If you happen to see Lady Evelyn, would you kindly relay that I am searching for her? |
| Home 8 | Miss Dian seems to favor firearms, does she not? I am quite capable with firearms as well, but I find lose-range weapons more convenient. Though, I worry I may be a little out of practice, so I will have to ask her for tips sometime. |
| Home 9 | That knight... Excuse e, I could not help but let my gaze drift over, as she looked familiari. Where might we have met, you ask?... I will leave that to your imagination. Some things are better left unsaid, no? Let us leave the fact that I know Dame Luke just between us. |
| Home 10 | I often catch Miss Rustica glaring at me. Does she behave that way toward the others as well? While I do understand her propensity to be distrustul, I must say it is a bit troubling. When faced with such outright hostility, I fear I might one day act out of instinct... Could I trouble you, my lord, to subtly convey this to her on my behalf? |
| Home 11 | I heard a fire broke out at a well-known vacation estate. Apparently, it belonged to a prominent noble family. Tragically, a young lady who was recuperating there, along with the servants, were caught in the disaster. Truly unfortunate, is it not? You sense there is something more to the story? Oh, no, no. Fire is convenient—ahem. I mean, terrifying, so one must be cautious when handling it. I assure you, that is all I meant. |
| Home 12 | To be frank, I never imagined I could be living in such peace. For the longest time, as long as Lady Evelyn was happy, I was always content... I cannot express my gratitude to you enough, my lord. Please, continue to look after both my lady and myself in the days to come. |
| Awakening 1 | Oh, it appears I have grown stronger. |
| Awakening 2 | Ah. With this, I can be of greater service to you. |
| Awakening 3 | Does this mean you expect great things from me? |
| Awakening 4 | To think that I could become this strong... It is all thanks to you, my lord. |
| Awakening 5 | Color me surprised. Who would have thought I still had room to grow? Truly, my lord never ceases to amaze me. |
| Awakening 6 | To do all this for me, even knowing my true identity... I cannot be held responsible if Lady Evelyn gets jealous, you know? |
| Victory | That was quite satisfying to clean up. |
| Defeat | My, how unfortunate. |
| Skill 1 | Please do not hold this against me. |
| Skill 2 | Leave this to me. |
