In MementoMori, the standard team composition generally includes one main DPS who will carry the team , and up to four supports like healers, buffers, and debuffers that help elevate the DPS' performance.
For beginners, focus on getting carries that are powerful, easy to strengthen, as well as get dupes of. It is recommended to get DPS like Cordie or Florence.
Compared to Cordie, Florence can deal more damage and has a higher hit count. While Cordie's dupes can be easily bought with in-game currency. Ultimately when it comes down to choosing between the two, it is recommended to get Florence instead of Cordie, especially if you can buy copies of Florence dupes and there's no good limited SR unit available.
In the late game, parties will typically field two or more DPS. This setup usually requires having all the resources, including Kindling Orbs, needed to properly level up and upgrade two DPS, which may pose great challenges especially in the early game.

The most versatile support you can get in the early game is Merlyn, who has the ability to boost an ally's Critical Hit chance. On the other hand, Primavera stuns enemies in front of her and gives the entire party a modest ATK buff, as well as a SPD buff later on. Meanwhile, Mimi has the ability to extend your DPS's damage.
These three characters work well with most DPS, but as you go further into the game, support characters will start to only work with specific DPS. The team synergy may be affected by a range of facets such as soul type, the DPS' stats, and more. For example, there will be supports that only work with the DPS if it is the slowest unit in the team.
As a general strategy, synergize your main carry's skills with the skills of the supports to get the most out of your party's intended effects.

As certain units use their skills in a certain manner or attack in a specific direction, it is important to place all units in proper positions. Some units' skills will affect allies based on their positioning in the team.
For example, Merlyn should be placed next to the DPS and typically occupy the first row or fifth row, as her CRIT buff is applied to the character right next to her. If you put Merlyn in the second, third, or fourth row, the buff could end up being applied to another adjacent character, instead of going to your DPS carry. This will be the case until level 220, where Merlyn gains the ability to apply those buffs to two allies adjacent to her. At that point, you may position Merlyn in any row you see fit.
You will also want to place your most important units like your main DPS away from positions where they will be vulenrable. For instance, it is recommended to position your main DPS 3 slots away from an enemy Amour, as she has the ability to revive herself and deal an AoE-like attack within that range, with damage that scales off part of the damage she received from your team.
Moreover, it's recommended to place your main DPS away from an enemy Primavera as she has the ability to stun who's in front of her in your party comp.

Once you've assembled your team, you might want to test it out. If you're still early in the game, you can test our your team comp by simply doing a quest in the Main Quest and seeing if your new team beats the stage. If it doesn't, see if you can reposition your units, or put in a new unit that might be able to counter the unit that was giving you trouble, and then fight again.
But if you've already gotten past Quest 8-12, you can start fighting your friends in Friend Battles just to test out your team against an actual human opponent's team without risking your Battle League
rank. You can also watch battles in your world's Weekly Topics section to see if a team similar to yours has been featured and how that battle played out.

When you have at least three to five witches with the same Soul (Azure, Crimson, Emerald, or Amber), your party gets bonus buffs to its HP and ATK stats. This is great and all, but sometimes certain teams work when you have characters from different soul types in the same time, and the benefits from that outweigh the benefits of soul bonuses.
Case in point, a team of Merlyn, Cordie, Fenrir, Primavera, and Mimi hardly qualify for soul bonuses (Merlyn and Cordie are Emeralds, but Fenrir is Azure while Mimi and Primavera are Crimson), but their synergy will get you through many stages in the Main Quest.
You will eventually encounter units that require having at least 3 units of the same soul type such as Meria and Uniform A.A.

For PvE, it's recommended to have either Cordie or Florence as DPS, along with supports like Merlyn, Mimi, Primavera, and any strong unit as a fifth member.
Merlyn gives the main DPS placed next to the CRIT buff, and cleanses any debuffs that may be affecting your DPS. She also has the ability to maximize allies' damage output using her Resonance debuff.
Primavera gives the party her ATK and SPD buffs, and can be positioned in front of any enemy you want to stun. In that case however, Merlyn and your DPS will have to be moved to the 5th and 4th row, especially if you have Primavera occupy their position.
The fifth unit can be whoever you have available, but in this case we put in Soltina since you are guaranteed a copy of her from the Start-Dash Campaign. She is recommended to fill in the last position as she has the ability to soak up damage with her multi-barriers and stun opponents.

For PvP, you generally need 2-3 core units, usually your DPS, to build your team around. A combination of Cordie, Merlyn, or Primavera are recommended to be your DPS units for this mode.
PvP mode also puts more emphasis on a balanced team, and so you will benefit from having a tank who can draw attacks away from your DPS.
Nina isn't considered to be effective in PvE, but in PvP she can be a very effective dodge tank that can steal buffs and dodge hits from Cordie/Florence teams (most teams will probably have them as DPSes in low-end PvP). As for your last unit, you have a few options.
Meria can give your team a 10% SPD boost, though she needs her unique weapon at UR rarity (but this means she's already good to use even at one dupe). She can also be a good counter to Nina teams (which are also common in low-end PvP) because of her ACC buff.
Lunalynn meanwhile can silence an entire team by herself if she deals a critical hit (though she needs her unique weapon at LR rarity and it would probably be better to place her next to Merlyn). If you have nothing else, Dian could also be a good option to boost your main DPS/Nina's EVD.
The only problem with this team is that Nina can be countered by similar teams with Meria in it. Also, this team will probably not hold up in high-end PvP where players will be using Rusalka or teams full of Chaos characters.
