random target selection - MementoMori

MementoMori offers a dynamic combat system where random target selection is crucial. Learn more about the three primary attack types and how their targets are determined.

Attack Types and Target Mechanics

Attacks to X Random Enemies

Crystal Breaker

Attacks to X Random Enemies is the AoE attack type in which a specified number of enemies gets targeted simultaneously. In this type of attack, each enemy can only be targeted once per skill activation, regardless of the number of designated targets.

If the skill also said "Deals 1 physical attack to 5 random enemies" and there are only three enemies alive, only three remaining will be randomly targeted.

Amleth Crystal Breaker attack

For example, Amleth's Crystal Breaker skill deals 1 physical attack equal to 350% of her ATK to 3 random enemies. This means that Crystal Breaker simultaneously attacks 3 random enemies with 1 attack equal to 350% of her ATK.

Please note that Taunt effects can influence target selection, but other enemies will be targeted if multiple targets exist.

X Attacks to Enemies at Random

Mimi Wild Claw

This type of attack has a designated number of attacks distributed randomly among enemies. Each attack selects a random target from the enemy party.

The difference between this and the X random enemies is that enemies at random may mean no specific number of enemies are mentioned, as well as the duration of being attacked.

If a skill said "Deals 10 magic attacks to enemies at random", each of those 10 attacks will hit a randomly chosen enemy regardless if they are already hit.

Mimi Random Target Selection

Mimi's Wild Claw randomly dealt four physical attacks to enemies in this example. It hit Freesia and Olivia twice.

X Attacks to 1 Random Enemy

Snow Wolf

In this attack, a single random enemy is chosen as the sole target for all attacks. A new random target is selected for the remaining attacks if the initial target is defeated.

If the skills description mentions, "Deals 10 physical attacks to 1 random enem", all ten attacks will be concentrated on a single random enemy, even if they are defeated before all attacks land.

Fenrir Snow Wolf

In this example, Fenrir's skill targeted enemy Fenrir alone. This also works for debuffs.

Combat System Explained

Target Selection

Random

Random Target
Enemies are chosen as targets randomly. However, characters are more likely to attack enemies in front of them and less likely to attack enemies far away. Characters like Florence and Cordie randomly targets their enemies.

Condition

at start of turn target
Targets are selected based on the hierarchy of a specific stat, such as the descending/ascending order of characters' ATK. Many of the buff skills were targeted this way.

Choosing Targets

If multiple characters meet the same conditions, the enemy in the higher slot in the party will be chosen. When a skill hits multiple times, each hit checks conditions separately.

Using Stats

Stats used "at the start of the battle" or "at the start of the 1st turn" always use the original value before any buffs or debuffs. For other skills, the current stat value (including buffs and debuffs) is used each time a target is chosen based on stat.

Directly in Front

directly in front
The target selected is the enemy location in the same party information slow as the character using the skill. If the enemy located directly in front of the character has been defeated, the target will be randomly selected from the remaining enemies. Zara and Primavera have this kind of target selection.

Adjacent

Adjacent
The target will be selected from 1 specific character and the characters on either side of them in a party formation. If there are no characters on either side of the specific character, 1 character in the party will be forcibly selected randomly as a target. Amour and Eir's Unique Weapon has this kind of target selection.
