"The laws of the People of the Sand are absolute. Breaking any law is unforgivable."
It was supposed to be an ordinary day for Liberia when she found an intruder in the lands of the sand. A girl with long, black hair and glasses, with a poisonous spider at her feet. Liberia saved her by killing the spider, but she ended up violating a law of the People of the Sand.
She saved an intruder. That intruder was named Ayse, and she could read while Liberia could not.
"In that case, I'll teach you," Ayse said, and Liberia accepted. Even if it was against the law to do so.
Every day, Liberia and Ayse met each other, and Ayse would teach her the alphabet. How to read and so on. Liberia was afraid of breaking the law, of the new "sparkly-sparkly" feeling growing within her. Yet, still, she wanted Ayse to teach her.
To reassure Liberia, Ayse told her the following.
"Then, let's make this our little secret. That way, you won't have to worry about anyone getting mad at you, right?"
So it was, despite being from opposite lives, despite the disagreements over mud baths, Gran Gran's laws, and whatever else, Liberia learned from Ayse her first alphabet letters, while also learning that she had her first friend.
But the peaceful days would not last. The other people of the Sand had found Ayse, and it was the law to kill all outsiders. Liberia found herself torn between having to defend her friend or break the law further.
Of course, she chose to break the law. Ayse was her friend, after all. However, Ayse had other ideas.
"Did you really think the likes of you could ever become friends with someone like me?"
Though Liberia thought that if she had somehow wronged Ayse, she would make it right, tragedy followed. In the confusion, Liberia had accidentally stabbed Ayse. Ayse, dying, smiles and implies their meeting was a mistake.
Overwhelmed with guilt, Liberia believes everything was wrong and unleashes a magical sandstorm that withers life around her, wishing to erase her memories. However, Ayse's will breaks through the storm, and she apologizes and confesses that she was truly happy as friends.
"What matters is what you want! Try and remember! How you felt the first day I taught you!"
Liberia realizes her feelings matter. She accepts that meeting Ayse was not a mistake, but a gift. Liberia reached for Ayse, and they reconnected, deciding to stay with each other and continue to learn from one another as only true friends can.

Chapter 1
---
The laws of the People of the Sand are absolute. Breaking any law is unforgivable. But that day, I broke a law for the first time. I found an intruder within our territory, a poison spider at her feet. It would be dangerous to leave her there, so I shouted a warning. "Leave, now!" But instead Of leaving, the intruder came closer to me. Watch out! Without thinking, I shot an arrow, taking out the poison spider. But now this meant... that I saved the intruder... I-In times like these, I should just pretend I did nothing and leave! "Wait!" "My name is Ayse...! Thank you for saving me...!" When someone introduces themselves, you must introduce yourself in return— that is a law too. So, I would not be doing a bad thing... "L-Liberia..." That was my first meeting with my secret friend—Ayse.
Chapter 2
---
Ayse is amazing. She can read. I cannot. Nobody ever taught me. "In that case, I'll teach you." Ayse offered to help me learn, but learning is no good. That is a law So, I have to say no. But, I already broke a law... Huh...? If a law is broken, a disaster should happen. So, why did nothing go wrong...? "Wanting to know something isn't a bad thing. Keeping promises is important, but letting your curiosity be your guide matters just as much." "Curiosity"...? Another word I do not know. Just like how I do not know why every day is sparkly-sparkly now that I met Ayse. I wonder what that feeling is called? I want to know...the name of this feeling. The reason I look forward to every morning after meeting Ayse. I want Ayse...to teach me. "Then, let's make this our little secret. That way, you won't have to worry about anyone getting mad at you, right?" A secret...? Then, maybe... After that, I learned the alphabet from Ayse. Learning is very fun. But, me and Ayse are different in every way...
Chapter 3

What I like, I want Ayse to like, too... So, I made her a mud bath. But, Ayse would not get in... Still, I did not give up. I chased her...but Ayse got mad. She yelled that she was going to leave... I do not know why she got mad. But, I did not want this to be goodbye. I want to be with Ayse more. And, l... "l want...to know Ayse." I want to learn, because I do not know Ayse yet. That is not a bad thing. Just like Ayse taught me. I slowly stuck my hand out toward Ayse, and she gently took it. "I'm sorry, Liberia." "l...want to know you, too... Because...l want to be your friend, Liberia." "Friend"... Only Gran Gran can give permission to make friends. That is the law. So, breaking it is no good. But...l...do not want to pretend I never had these feelings. Because, l... "Ayse, my friend... I am happy...!" Even if breaking the law was not right, my heart felt lighter— far lighter than it ever did when I followed the law. After that, me and Ayse became even better friends. We fought sometimes, but we always made up right away. I thought we would be friends forever. But...breaking the law, really was no good, after all.
Chapter 4
---
"Kill that outsider!" Yelling that, the guards circled around Ayse. Killing intruders is the law. If I do not do something, Ayse will be... "Do not kill her!" I jumped in front of Ayse right away. Everyone glared at me. I-I am scared. But...Ayse is my friend! I will protect her, no matter what! "Hmph! What a waste...! And just when I had you good and fooled, too." I turned around, and Ayse was looking at me with cold eyes. Why...is she glaring at me...? "Did you really think the likes of you could ever become friends with someone like me?"
Chapter 5
---
Did I...do something wrong? Something to make Ayse mad...? Then, I will make it right! So...! "Liberia!" Ayse was shouting as she rushed towards me. Her eyes burning as if an enemy was in front of her. So, she really... I shut my eyes and braced myself. Then, a pained cry rang out. Ay... se...? I was scared to look, but when I opened my eyes... "Ayse!" I saw the dagger I was holding, stuck deep in Ayse's belly. A-Ah... I...I did this... to Ayse...? Ayse looked up at me with a weak smile... "The two of us... should never have met after all...huh...?" Why are you...smiling like that? Looking so pleased? I stabbed you...so, why?! I do not understand. Nothing makes sense. I do not understand, so teach me... Ayse...! But she did not respond. Her eyes would not open. l... killed... Ayse.
Chapter 6
---
"...It was a mistake to meet Ayse." A voice I did not know echoed in my head. Who said that...? Could it be...one of the Gods of Sand? Right, Ayse said so, too. We should not...have met... Because, if she had not met me... Ayse would not have died! Everything was a mistake. Meeting Ayse, wanting to learn... spending time together, having fun... Becoming...friends... Before I realized, a storm of sand had begun whipping around me. It withered the plants, and returned them to the land. Life once withered can never be returned If only...my heart could shrivel, too... Shrivel and crumble away... along with my memories with Ayse. If everything withers away into nothing, maybe then... I could pretend we never met...? If I could just erase all those mistaken memories... Goodbye, Ayse...
Chapter 7
---
The sand, which withered every form of life it touched, began to consume the world. "Liberia!" Is that Ayse's voice? But...how...? Breaking through the storm of sand, Ayse stretched her hand towards me. But, I did not take it. Because, me and Ayse cannot be together...! The storm of sand grew stronger. But, Ayse did not give up. "I'm sorry, Liberia. But, the truth is... I was happy to be your friend! The two of us meeting wasn't a mistake!" It was...! Because, if we had not met, Ayse would not have...! "l don't want to be separated from you! Because...l want to stay as your friend. That's how I feel. What about you?" My feelings do not matter. Because, if I follow how I feel, I will only make another mistake. So, I should just follow our laws... "What matters is what you want! Try and remember! How you felt the first day I taught you!" ...l remember. That day, Ayse taught me. She said following how I feel is just as important as following the laws of my tribe. How I feel...? There is only one thing I want to do. l... "l want to be with you...!" I reached out, and Ayse squeezed my hand tightly. "Yeah... I want to be with you, too, Liberia...!" Ayse's hands were so warm. She broadened my horizons and awakened these feelings within me, so meeting her could never be a mistake. Because... that is what I believe. "l am happy I met you, Ayse." There are still lots of things I do not know. I am sure that is the same for her... So, from today, we can keep teaching each other new things. That is something only the two of us together can do. Something only us friends can do—
