Gender Does Not Affect Gameplay
Players are given the decision to choose between a male or female version of Dani Rojas at the start of the game, however this decision does not affect gameplay and any part of the storyline.
Both Genders are Canon for Dani
Both genders are a unified experience for Dani, as expressed by the game's narrative director. That should ease players' rumination over the validity of their playthrough experience as either a male or female Dani Rojas.
After talking to several members of our team, something that was clearly important was not to try and create two different storylines. If you pick male or female, that choice is for you to make, and that journey of Dani will be one and the same.

Voice Acting
Many players in the community sing praise to Dani's female voice actress. In comparison to Dani's female VA, the male voice acting has been criticized as being lackluster and less expressive.

Anonymous over 2 yearsSeeing the other “character” get killed literally in the opening scene. Seeing the male get shot and killed vs the female. Easier to swallow. Shoot the male Dani every single time. Female Dani is saved from this fate.
