Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Should Lucanis Imprison or Forgive Illario?

In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, players can encounter the choice to have Lucanis imprison or forgive Illario. See what the consequences and rewards of imprisoning or forgiving Illario are in this guide!

Should Lucanis Forgive or Imprison Illario?

Choose to Imprison Illario

Meeting Lucanis

It is recommended that players have Lucanis imprison Illario, as the upgrades that Lucanis gets from this choice can largely increase his personal damage output, over the rewards for forgiving Illario which only contribute utility.

While the choice appears during the Murder of Crows quest, do note that you need to finish all the Treviso Faction quests first before Lucanis actually becomes a Hero of the Veilguard!

List of All Major Choices and Consequences

Forced to Imprison Illario if You Save Minrathous

If you helped Minrathous instead of Treviso, you have no choice but to imprison Illario during the Murder of Crows quest.

This means that you are guaranteed to get Demon of Defiance (Veilguard Skill) and Crow's Tenacity (Legendary Armor).

Should You Help Minrathous or Treviso?

Outcomes and Consequences of Forgiving or Imprisoning Illario

Summary of Choice Outcomes

Prompt
Lucanis: Mierda. What am I supposed to do with this idiot?
Choice Consequence
His actions are unforgiveable.
(Imprison Illario)
・You've convinced Lucanis to imprison Illario for his misdeeds.
・Lucanis obtains Demon of Defiance (Veilguard Skill).
・Obtain the Crow's Tenacity (Legendary Armor).
You still care. Show mercy.
(Forgive Illario)
・You've convinced Lucanis to show Illario forgiveness.
・Lucanis obtains Demon of Rebellion (Veilguard Skill).
・Obtain the Crow's Poise (Legendary Armor).

Imprison Illario

Reward Effect
Demon of Defiance
Veilguard Skill
・Lucanis's Critical damage increases by 50%, and his Detonation damage increases by 50%.
・Lucanis's Abilities now deal 25% more damage to enemies suffering from an Affliction.
Crow's Tenacity
Legendary Armor
・Detonations vs. Knocked Down enemies also deal Stagger to all enemies
・Stagger from Detonating is increased by 50% for each enemy hit

Imprisoning Illario will improve Lucanis' overall damage, as well as increasing the Stagger potency of his Detonations. The Veilguard Skill and Legendary Armor are both offensively-oriented, and are more generally applicable.

Forgive Illario

Reward Effect
Demon of Rebellion
Veilguard Skill
・Your resistance is increased by 10%.
・The party's Barrier damage is increased by 25%.
Crow's Poise
Legendary Armor
・Detonating an Overwhelmed enemy Detonates another nearby Overwhelmed enemy (30-second cooldown)
・Enemies near the second Detonation become Vulnerable to Necrotic damage

Choosing to instead forgive Illario grants Lucanis more utility-based upgrades, through increased resistances and Barrier damage, as well as a secondary Detonation. As the utility is a more niche option, choosing this is less advised.

When Does the Choice Appear?

During the Murder of Crows Quest

The choice to forgive or imprison Illario happens towards the end of the Murder of Crows companion quest. This is the last in Lucanis' companion quest chain, and he will become a Hero of the Veilguard once it is complete.
