Runes are equippable items that provide Active and Passive abilities to help you during combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. See a list of all Runes, their Active and Passive bonuses, as well as how to get and use them!

All Rune Active and Passive Bonuses

Rune Active and Passive Bonuses
Overflow Active: Your current Potion's additional effects are applied.
Passive: +1 maximum Potions
Defy Active: You take no damage from your current target for 10 seconds.
Passive: Take 10% less damage while at Low Health
Divert Active: Enemies disengage from you and attack your companions instead for 10 seconds. Does not affect some of the strongest boss enemies.
Passive: +10% health
Hemorrhage Active: All of your weapon attacks apply Bleeding for 10 seconds.
Passive: +10% Bleeding duration
Repulse Active: All enemies within 6 meters are Knocked Down.
Passive: +10 all Resistances while at High Health
Ascend Active: Your health drops to 1, and you cannot heal any higher for 10 seconds. You gain Enhanced Damage, Quickened, and Shocking Weapons, and your Mana is restored to its maximum.
Passive: +10% damage
Fortify Active: You gain Invulnerable.
Passive: +25% Invulnerable duration
Withstand Active: You gain Immovable.
Passive: +25% Immovable duration
Dominate Active: All generated Mana is converted to Ultimate for 10 seconds.
Passive: +10% Ultimate generation
Refresh Active: The durations of all applied Advantages are reset.
Passive: +10% Advantage duration
Hunger Active: Your weapon attacks leech 25% of their damage for 10 seconds.
Passive: +10% leech effectiveness
Scourge Active: All of your weapon attacks deal Necrotic damage for 20 seconds.
Passive: +10% Necrotic damage
Pierce Active: Your damage gains +100% Penetration for 10 seconds.
Passive: +10% Penetration
Shatter Active: Ranged attacks break through enemies' guard for 10 seconds
Passive: +10% Ranged attack damage
Besiege Active: Light and Heavy attacks are no longer penalized vs. Barrier for 20 seconds
Passive: +10% damage vs. Barrier
Crush Active: Light and Ranged attacks are no longer penalized vs. Armor for 20 seconds
Passive: +10% damage vs. Armor
Crystallize Active: All enemies within 10 meters are Frozen
Passive: +10% Frozen duration

Diminish Active: All enemies within 6 meters are Weakened
Passive: 10% Primer duration
Electrify Active: All of your weapon attacks deal Electric damage for 20 seconds
Passive: +10% Electricity damage
Escalate Active: Your next Ability is greatly enhanced, dealing much higher damage or increasing efficacy
Passive: +10% Ability damage
Glaciate Active: All of your weapon attacks deal Cold damage for 20 seconds
Passive: +10% Cold damage
Mend Active: Lose all Rage and heal for an equivalent amount
Passive: +10% incoming healing
Ravage Active: Deal 50% more damage vs. health for 20 seconds
Passive: +10% damage vs. health
Redouble Active: All of your companions' Ability cooldowns are refreshed.
Passive: +10% companion Ability damage

Scorch Active: All of your weapon attacks deal Fire damage for 20 seconds
Passive: +10% Fire damage
Upend Active: All of your defensive Resistances become offensive damage bonuses of the same type for 10 seconds
Passive: +5% all Resistances
Vivify Active: Your ability cooldowns are refreshed, and your next Ability use is free.
Passive: +10% Mana generation

Runes are items that can be equipped on your character that provide unique Active and Passive abilities. They provide offensive and defensive buffs to help you take down foes.

You can equip up to three Runes in the Lyrium Dagger.

How to Use Runes

Trigger Active Abilities During Combat

Use runes by opening the ability shortcut and then pressing the Rune button (default: L2 + Triangle). Use the D-Pad to switch between four equipped Runes.

When the Active ability of a rune is triggered, it will go on cooldown. Note that you cannot switch to your other Runes while a Rune is on cooldown.
