Unfortunately, the chosen companion will be killed by Ghilan'nain after her boss fight. Given this, the chosen companion will be unavailable to use for the rest of the game's story. As such, players should consider the following points listed below.
All Companions and How to Recruit Them
One consideration is how much players like each companion's personalities, characters, and stories. As the selected companion disappears for the remaining parts of the game, players may lose time being with and learning more about them, ultimately making the game experience less enjoyable.
This criterion is especially relevant if players choose to pursue either one of the companions. In this case, players should avoid choosing whomever they are romancing.
An arguably more important point of consideration is how much value each companion provides in combat and team composition. As the game's end-game has difficult fights, players must ensure that they keep the companion that will prove more useful in fights.
Harding can offer decent DPS, but generally, Rook should be dealing damage instead of the Companions. Her supportive abilities Adrenaline Rush and Soothing Potion can be accessed via Lucanis as well, in the assumption they save Treviso during the On Deadly Wings main quest.
Should You Help Minrathous or Treviso?
Davrin can offer the Invulnerable buff via On War, Victory and a taunt with the Battle Cry skill, but Taash can do the same with Fortune's Favor and Dragon's Roar. Moreover, Davrin's fire damage specialty has a massive overlap with Taash's skills and upgrades as well.
If players are still having trouble to decide on who to send, they may consider the Companions' classes with respect to their Rook. Rook can generally cover what the Companion may miss out providing, hence, sending Harding as a Rogue Rook or sending Davrin as a Warrior Rook are recommended as well.
Mage Rook players may opt to send who they do not use in their respective team setups.

Choice | Outcome |
Davrin and Assan will risk themselves leading the second team: Davrin leads the distraction. |
・ Davrin will be unavailable for the remainder of the questline. ・ Davrin cannot be chosen during the Last Gambit quest |
Harding will risk herself leading the second team: Harding leads the distraction. |
・ Harding will be unavailable for the remainder of the questline. ・ Harding cannot be chosen during the Last Gambit quest |
Above is a summary of the outcomes and consequences of all choices.
Sending Davrin to lead the distraction will disable their participation for the rest of the questline, disallowing players from using his combat skills.
They will return in a cutscene during the confrontation with the elven gods later in the quest but will be eliminated upon getting pierced by Ghilan'nain's tentacles and thrown into a pit of blight.
Assan also dies when players choose Davrin as they attempt to save him from falling into the pit of blight. Unfortunately, Assan ends up falling into the pit of themselves.
Likewise, sending Harding to lead the distraction will disable her participation for the rest of the questline, disallowing players from utilizing her skills and abilities.
She will return in a cutscene later in the quest but will be eliminated after the fight with Ghilan'nain, as she gets pierced by Ghilan'nain's tentacles and thrown into a pit of blight.
The Companion sent for distraction will not affect the ending of the story. The ending to be acquired will heavily depend on the choices made during The Last Gambit quest, which does not require one of the Companions to be available.
The prompt appears after the Veilguard party enters the eluvian to stop the elven gods during the Isle of the Gods main quest.
Upon arriving at the shoreline, a conversation will occur about the size of the Antaam army in the island. Davrin will offer to distract them, and Harding will cut in and offer to go instead due to her specialty as a scout.
