Choosing to punish Illario or Save Caterina has no effect on the ending of this quest or the game. Lucanis and Strife still reach an agreement, form a harmonious bond, and prepare themselves to find the truth about Illario and Caterina regardless.

Likewise, choosing to focus on saving Caterina leads Lucanis and Spite to set aside their differences at the former's proposal to find Lucanis' grandmother.
The choice to punish Illario or save Caterina appears at the end of the "Inner Demons" companion quest, right after finding Lucanis.
