Birds for the Isolated Evelyn
Evelyn spent her days in a quiet, isolated vacation house, tucked away from the world under the promise that she was only there to recover. Each year, her family remembered her with a bird for her birthday, but their letters grew fewer, their presence more distant. She told herself it was proof of their love, that once she was well, they would come back for her. Yet, silence around her whispered otherwise.
When Moineau arrived, Evelyn felt an odd familiarity, as though she had known her forever. Talking to Moineau felt like speaking to her sister a long time ago. But beneath Moineau's kindness lingered something unsettling, making Evelyn wonder if her words were truly sincere.
Affliction Returned
Soon after, Evelyn's bird died suddenly, and dread washed over her. She believed her strange illness had returned. Unpleasant memories arose: the day a heavy clock nearly crushed her, only to shatter harlessly while her sister, far from danger, was left bloodied. Her parents' horrified eyes had followed, and soon, she was sent away, hidden under the guise of recovery. A realization came that she was not sick at all, but a witch, concealed to protect her family's name. Evelyn clung desperately to the promise that she was only ill, that her parents would return. In the stillness of the estate, Evelyn wavered between hope and despair, torn between freedom and yearning for her family.

| Happy birthday. This year's card has an unfamiliar handwriting, too. Father must have been so busy, he needed to ask another attendant to write it, I'm sure. And, from Mother... I'm sure she simply had no time to respond to my last letter. There's no letter from my little sister, either. I wrote for her to send me one, but it must have slipped her mind. She can be so forgetful! For my birthday present, they sent me a pet bird, just like every year. Hehe, it's simply adorable. I can only hope this one lives longer than the others... Since I'm living alone in this vacation estate until I get better, they've always sent me birds to keep me company... I couldn't ask for more. "How long will it take before you wake up to all of their lies?" They aren't lying...! When I get better, my parents will come to take me back home. They promised. All of this is just proof of how much they love me...! |

| Hehe! Soon, a new butler will come to work at this estate! All of the previous servants quit so quickly. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, but... Ah, they're here! My...! What charming gray eyes. They even shine faintly in the light...! So her name is Moineau...! Hehe, it seems that yet another adorable bird has come to stay here with me this year. It's strange... But, when I speak with her, it feels as though she's an old friend... Perhaps that's why... even though we've only just met, I can't help but keep prattling on about myself... How rude of me... Hehe, this does bring back memories, though. I often used to talk with my little sister like this, didn't I...? It makes me want to see my family again even more... "I do hope the lord and lady come back for you soon." I wonder why... Moineau said it so kindly... And yet, somehow... it felt as though she was lying... |

| "You poured me a cup of tea? Thank you, Moineau. Hmm... There's no need to prepare my breakfast, though. I'm not hungry this morning." To that, Moineau said, "I shall prepare some snacks for you, then." She truly is kind. Oh, right! It's about time I fed my bird. Now, make sure to eat a whole...! ...Why...? Just this morning, you were still...! ...I must prepare a grave for it... I'll lay out a bed of flowers inside, just like always... What should I do...? It's come back... My illness... that hurts those around me in my place... |

| It first started when I was still living with my family. Just as our family's grandfather clock was about to fall and crush me, it shattered on its own. Somehow, I was left unharmed. But my sister, though far away from the debris, was covered in wounds... My wailing sister, doused in blood... My parents' eyes, staring at me as though I were a monster... It happened not long after. My family claiming I was ill, and sending me away to recover at this estate. "When you get better, we'll come back for you at once." Or, so they promised... "You know they'll never come. After all, you aren't sick. You're just a witch." I am sick! I'll get better! That's why they sent me here... "That was so they could hire servants to silence you. News of a noble house birthing a witch would only taint the family name, after all." ...No, that's a lie... A lie!! "Besides...if you just disappear, no one else will have to get hurt. And you'll no longer have to count the days they haven't come for you. Then, you won't have to suffer anymore." ...That's...right... It's okay...to set myself free now, isn't it...? |

| The cut on Moineau's hand gleamed red, illuminated by the full moon's glow. Not only could she not kill me, she even got herself hurt in the process... It always ends up like this, doesn't it...? As sudden noise rang out from the floor below, and Moineau ran out to find its source, weapon in hand. As I listened to the ensuing echo of the clanging blades, I found myself curling into a ball... I truly am worthless... After some time, Moineau returned, covered in a number of fresh wounds... Who cares if she can't feel pain...! At this rate, she'll...! ...It's all my fault... Because of me, Moineau has to suffer this much...! The moment I realized I was no longer loved... I should have just died... Instead...I got my hopes up... Believing that one day, they really would come to take me back home...! That's why, despite knowing I only ever hurt those around me... I've stayed alive until now... And this is the result...! If it wasn't for that promise, all my suffering, and all this tragedy, would never have happened...! So, why...?! "If you were just going to abandon me, why did you make that promise?! You only gave me false hope!" Don't give me any reasons to wait for you...! Just tell me... you don't want me anymore...! If you'd only told me that, I would have given up... On being part of this family...on love... and on my life... Even those birds you sent me, while I was all alone... would have been spared... |

I'm fine... This is simply my fate... "You really are a liar to the end, aren't you?" It's a fitting end for a witch who never allowed herself to wake from a dream drenched in lies, is it not? Suddenly, Moineau knelt before me, and held up something round... An old...silver coin...? "Please wait here. I will surely come back for you. This is the proof of my promise." But, another promise is... "I will not abandon you, my lady." ...! I know it's wrong of me... It's wrong of me, but...! "Moineau...please, don't get hurt..." This...will be the last time... So, I beg you...! Let me believe, just this once...! That you'll keep this promise... That you'll come back for me, no matter what...! That I...deserve to keep living... That I deserve to be loved... So, please...! "I have come for you, my lady..." ...! Thank you...Moineau...! |

| As we gazed on at the brilliantly burning estate, Moineau told me the truth about everything. About herself. Her past. And about those who likely requested my assassination. "Though, that is only a hunch," Moineau added. But, I was sure she was right. "More importantly, are you quite certain you're alright with this? If you stay with me... you might get..." "I do not feel pain, so it is no matter," she says... My word, don't say such things, even as a joke... I held the silver coin up to the sky. The full moon reflected on its surface made it look just like a star shining in the night. "Let us go, Moineau. Getaways are best made under the cloak of nightfall." To that, she said, "If we move in haste, we will only get separated." Hehe... "It's alright. Even if we do, you'll simply come and find me again, won't you, Moineau?" Two lone stars bearing the same scar drift through the night. Even when the light of dawn masks their glow, as long as they remain together, then surely... |
