The Heart of Corruption Objectives

Quest Objectives

The Heart of Corruption questline can be started relatively early, but requires the completion of several quests to be fully completed, as their completion is necessary to progress to the next few objectives.

To open the door at the crossroads on Beacon Island, enemy Revenants must be defeated in order to collect their essence. However, in order to challenge the Revenants, the appropriate Champion Essences must first be collected.

Unseal The Gate of Deep Sorrows

Defeat Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar'nan

Defeat Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar
The first champion essence can be collected by defeating Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar'nan. Desmal can be found on the rooftops of Crow's Road. Defeating it progresses the Gate of Deep Sorrows quest, and allows you to fight the revenant Betrayal of Felassan.
Gate of Deep Sorrows Walkthrough

Defeat Betrayal of Felassan

Betrayal of Felassan Scaled
With Desmal's champion essence, return to the Converged City and go beyond the Gate of Deep Sorrows. At the end of the area behind the gate is a Revenant. It shares the same moveset with shield-wielding enemies, just with some added effects and unique ranged attacks.

It's weak to Necrotic damage, so it is recommended to bring Necrotic weapons and companions.

Unseal The Gate of Parched Hopes

Defeat The Disciple In-Ichor

Disciple-In-Ichor
The Disciple-in-Ichor can be found in the ruins of Lavendel Village. This time, the enemy is weak to Fire, so bring equipment that can help you exlploit that. Defeat it to get its champion's essence and unseal the Gate of Parched Hopes.

Defeat Slaughter of Pillars

Slaughter of Pillars

Head to Elvhenan's Haven and use the essence to get past the Gate of Parched Hopes. Behind the gate, the Revenant Slaughter of Pillars can be fought.

Like Betrayal of Felassan, Necrotic damage proves quite effective, so it is recommended you again bring weapons and companions specializing in this type of damage. Be careful of its ranged Blight attack, as it can be tricky to dodge and can quickly stack Blight DoT since he can quickly cast it over and over when nearing death. Defeat it and collect the second Revenant essence.

Unseal The Gate of Pale Reflections

Defeat Amarell the Unwoven

Amarell the Unwoven
The last Champion essence is dropped by Amarell the Unwoven and can be found in Solitude's Edge within the Hossberg Wetlands.

Like the Disciple-In-Ichor, this champion is also weak to Fire, so bring your best fire gear for maximum burn. Claim its essence to unlock the path to the final Revenant.

Defeat Fall of The Protector

Fall of the Protector
The last Revenant can be found in the Heights of Athim after opening the Gates of Pale Reflections. Fall of the Protector is susceptible to Ice, so use Ice weapons to more easily bring it down and collect the final Revenant essence.

Place the Corrupted Essences on the Door

Place the Corrupted Essences on the Door
Once all three essences have been collected, the previously locked door in Beacon Island can now be opened. Step inside and prepare to face the final boss of this quest.

Defeat The Revenant Dragon

How to Beat The Revenant Dragon

Revenant Dragon Attacks
Swipe Does a quick swipe with either its front or rear legs, depending on your position.
Headbutt Quickly snaps its jaws as if taunting before lunging forward to try and slam down its head on you.
Body Slam Flies up and briefly charges before brining itself down with force, affecting a large area
Breath Attack Breath Attack changes with Element.
  • Cold: Applies Chilled and slows you down.
  • Fire: Applies Burning and has large AoE.
  • Electricity: Applies Shocked which causes damage over time.

(Can shoot on land or while flying.)
Tail Swipe Swings its body in a 180-degree arc to try and hit you with its tail.
Charge Briefly winds up before charging at you in a straight line.
The Tail Swipe is the only attack you can normally block, unless you're playing the Champion Specialization with Inspiring Guard.

The Revenant Dragon shares the same moves as other dragons, with the unique ability to change the element of it's attacks. It starts with the Ice element, followed by Fire, and then Lightning.

The transition to each element occurs when it uses its Blinding attack, so be prepared to deal with it as it occurs. Although it's able to change the element it attacks with, it's still vulnerable to Fire throughout the entire battle.

Defeating the Revenant Dragon can prove to be quite a challenge due to the nature of the changing elements and it's high level. Make sure to bring the appropriate armor, and make sure that Rook is properly built for this fight.

Best Classes and Specialization Tier List

Aim for the Chest

The Revenant Dragon, like other dragons, takes increased damage to the chest when knocked down, but is only vulnerable for a short time. Attack its legs to knock it down, then use Rook's strongest attacks once it's on the ground.

Seek Mythal's Essence

Mythal can assist Rook in this fight, performing an attack that takes a decent chunk of the Revenant Dragon's health, while leaving it vulnerable for a short period.

Mythal will help if Rook gives the correct answers during the conversation with her in the Regrets of the Dread Wolf quest.

The Heart of Corruption Quest Rewards

Obtain The Last Resort Accessory

Quest Rewards
After defeating the Revenant Dragon, a small area at the edge of the arena will open up, where the Dragon's Tear memento can be collected, as well as a powerful unique ring called The Last Resort.

The Last Resort provides a 20% damage buff and a -20% resistance penalty every time Rook uses an ability. The effect resets when Rook defends or dodges. A very powerful item that requires finesse to take full advantage of.
