The Heart of Corruption questline can be started relatively early, but requires the completion of several other quests involving three other Gates in addition to the one on Beacon Island.
The gate with three locks requires essences from Revenants in The Crossroads, but getting to each Revenant requires Champion Essences from different bosses scattered across the overworld to open the three other gates.

The Heart of Corruption's first champion essence drops from Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar'nan, found on the rooftops of Crow's Road. Defeating it progresses the Gate of Deep Sorrows quest, and allows you to fight the Betrayal of Felassan Revenant.

The Heart of Corruption can then be progressed by returning to the Converged City, and using Desmal's Champion Essence to open the Gate of Deep Sorrows . At the end of the area behind the gate is a Revenant.
It shares the same moveset with shield-wielding enemies, just with some added effects and unique ranged attacks. It's weak to Necrotic damage, so it is recommended to bring Necrotic weapons and companions.

The Heart of Corruption's' next champion is the Disciple-in-Ichor, found in the ruins of Lavendel Village. This time, the enemy is weak to Burning, so bring equipment that can help you exlploit that. Defeat it to get its champion's essence and unseal the Gate of Parched Hopes.

Head to Elvhenan's Haven and use the Disciple's Essence to unlock the Gate of Parched Hopes. Behind the gate, the Revenant Slaughter of Pillars can be fought.
Necrotic damage remains effective, so aim to use this against the Revenant. Be wary of its ability to apply Blight as it can quickly stack lethal amounts on Rook with its ranged attacks.

Fire | Necrotic |
The Heart of Corruption's last Champion is Amarell the Unwoven, located in Solitude's Edge within the Hossberg Wetlands. This enemy is weak to Burning, and drops the Essence that opens the Gate of Pale Reflections.

Cold | Fire |
The last Revenant can be found in the Heights of Athim after opening the Gates of Pale Reflections. The boss will only enter the fight after an initial undead horde is dealt with, and attacks at range for most of the fight.
Be mindful of the constant undead reinforcements during this battle. Fall of the Protector is weak to Cold, so exploit Cold damage to quickly take it down and grab its Revenant Essence.
The Heart of Corruption's final act takes place once all the Revenants have been defeated. Take their Essences to the locked gate in Beacon Island. Open it with the Essences, and walk through to find the Revenant Dragon.
Revenant Dragon Attacks | |
---|---|
Swipe | Does a quick swipe with either its front or rear legs, depending on your position. |
Headbutt | Quickly snaps its jaws as if taunting before lunging forward to try and slam down its head on you. |
Body Slam | Flies up and briefly charges before brining itself down with force, affecting a large area |
Breath Attack | Breath Attack changes with Element. ・Cold: Applies Chilled and slows you down. ・Fire: Applies Burning and has large AoE. ・Electricity: Applies Shocked which causes damage over time. ・Can shoot on land or while flying |
Tail Swipe | Swings its body in a 180-degree arc to try and hit you with its tail. Note: The Tail Swipe is the only attack you can normally block, unless you're playing the Champion Specialization with Inspiring Guard. |
Charge | Briefly winds up before charging at you in a straight line. |
The Heart of Corruption's Final Boss is the Revenant Dragon. It has the unique ability to change the element of its attacks, starting with the Ice element, followed by Fire, and then Lightning.
The transition to each element occurs when it uses its Blinding attack, so be prepared to deal with it as it occurs. Although it's able to change the element it attacks with, it's still vulnerable to Fire throughout the entire battle.
Defeating the Revenant Dragon can prove to be quite a challenge due to the nature of the changing elements and it's high level. Make sure to bring the appropriate armor, and make sure that Rook is properly built for this fight.

The Revenant Dragon, like other dragons, takes increased damage to the chest when knocked down, but is only vulnerable for a short time. Attack its legs to knock it down, then use Rook's strongest attacks once it's on the ground.
Before doing The Heart of Corruption, it is recommended that players do the Regrets of the Dread Wolf quest first. During this quest, convincing Mythal to help Rook will grant her favor for The Heart of the Corruption.
If convinced to help, she will assist Rook in this fight by performing an attack that takes a decent chunk of the Revenant Dragon's health, while leaving it vulnerable for a short period.
