| 1 | Look for a Suitable Fishing Spot |
|---|---|
![]() Look for natural bodies of water that are at least knee high, as you can fish in these spots as long as these conditions are met. A good place to start is Nas River, which is the closest fishing spot to your camp at Howling Hill. ▶︎ Pywel Interactive Map and Locations |

| 2 | Equip a Fishing Rod |
![]() To equip a fishing rod, first open your inventory or quick menu. To access the quick menu, open it by holding the left D-pad on the controller or T on PC. Make sure to toggle the fishing rod in the slot on the bottom right to properly equip it. You can tell if the rod is equipped if it is on your character's back. ▶︎ List of All Console and PC Controls |

| 3 | Cast Your Fishing Rod Into a Body of Water |
![]() Position your character and press and hold the Aim button. Release the button to cast your line. You can move your line a little to bait out the fish. |
|
| 4 | Pull Your Rod in the Opposite Direction |
| Once a fish takes the bait, press the Hook button to start fishing. Tire the fish by pulling your fishing rod in the opposite direction of its movement. Make sure there are no obstacles on the way as they will snap your reel. Repeat until the fish slows down. |
|
| 5 | Reel in the Fish When It Stops Moving |
| Once the fish stops moving, start reeling it in. A fish is tired out if it is not splashing the water. On a console, the controller will stop vibrating. If the fish is still fighting back, continue tiring it out. Reeling it in immediately will snap the line. On a controller, rotate the right analog stick clockwise to reel it in. |
In case you do not have a fishing rod, you can still get fish by wading into a body of water and catching them. This may take time, though, as walking around the water does not guarantee seeing a fish immediately. The fish may also evade capture if you do not grab them on time.

You will not be able to reel in a fish if it is still moving in the water. Reel it in only when it stops splashing and moving. You have to wait until the fish has calmed with no tension on your line before you can reel it in.
If the fish suddenly starts moving again, stop reeling and resume opposing it to tire it out again, then start reeling one more time.

You may also have a hard time trying to reel in fish if the fish keeps getting caught behind an obstacle, which can break your line. In this case, move away to a spot with no obstacles or to another fishing location if the obstructions are too bothersome.

Fishing near rocks and other obstacles can make things much more difficult as your line is more likely to get snagged.
Rocks and other obstacles can also obscure your vision, making it harder to see the fish's actions. For the best results, try fishing in deeper water with no obstacles in sight.

You need to pull the line up periodically to avoid it going loose, but you do not want to break it either. Pull the line up occasionally, but do not hold it for too long. This is one of the easiest ways to break your line while fishing.

You can purchase a fishing rod from vendors such as Alden, who is selling them for 15 copper in the city of Hernand.
