Increasing attack speed results in faster attack animations, which equate to a higher DPS per level. However, gains are not strictly linear, with an increase of around 1-2% per level.
The value of Attack Speed is that individual attack animations start and end much faster, allowing you to perform another action, such as a parry, dodge, or another attack string, much quicker than without any additonal attack speed.
Instead of adding attack speed at every opportunity, players looking to increase their attack speed should aim for breakpoints 5, 10, and 15 because these levels offer the greatest value.
Attack speed determines how quickly a character's attack animations play out. Higher levels of attack speed result in faster animations, allowing a character to land more attacks in the same amount of time.
Higher attack speeds lead to higher DPS output and make attacks safer to use since you can dodge, guard or parry much faster once the attack animation ends.
All actions counted as attacks are affected by attack speed and executed faster with each level attained.

You can increase your attack speed by equipping weapons and armor provide an attack speed bonus. Examples include the Alabaster Spear and the Ancient Woodpole, and the Sunset Reed Gloves.
Because attack speed is a global stat, you can benefit from an increased attack speed of a weapon even if it's not the weapon that's currently active.
