Crimson Desert features a vast open world that you can freely explore. The continent of Pywel is divided into five distinct regions: Hernand, a mountainous and river-filled area that serves as your starting location; Pailune, the homeland of the Greymanes; Demeniss, the center of Pywel’s political and military activity; Delesyia, a region known for its advancements in science and technology; and Crimson Desert, a lawless land of red sands.
Pywel is filled with quests, activities, encounters, hidden treasures, and challenges that you can tackle in any order you choose. Exploration will require you to utilize climbing, horseback riding, and gliding to traverse long distances. As you progress, discovering Traces of the Abyss will unlock fast travel points, allowing you to move between locations more easily.

As you dive deeper into the game, you will encounter the Abyss, a mysterious and powerful realm that plays a key role in the story. Its growing mystical imbalance sends fragments across the world of Pywel, posing a serious threat, and it is up to you to restore balance by discovering these remnants and confronting those who misuse its power.

Throughout the story, you will encounter multiple factions vying for power and influence across Pywel. Two of the most prominent groups are the Greymanes, led by Kliff, and their rivals, the Black Bears. Beyond these major factions, other groups also control different regions and strongholds, limiting access to certain locations.
You can liberate strongholds or encampments by defeating invading soldiers and their commanding boss. Once liberated, the region becomes safer to travel, and some areas are restored to their rightful residents. Completing faction quests can grant rewards such as new merchants, equipment, and access to resources and materials needed to help rebuild the Greymanes’ home.

Crimson Desert will feature base building elements that allow you to establish and manage your own base within Greymane Camp. You’ll be able to expand the camp using funds and resources acquired throughout your journey. You can prepare meals, manage the farm and ranch, and craft and place furniture throughout the base.

You’ll be able to send your comrades on missions across the continent, where they can reward you with currency, resources, and materials needed for cooking and alchemy. Missions will vary in type and difficulty, requiring a specific number of comrades, certain resources, and a set amount of time to complete.
In addition, you can dispatch your comrades to blockaded locations and enemy fortresses to help weaken enemy forces while you focus on other objectives. This allows you to gradually reduce hostile factions’ control without being physically present.

You’ll be able to gather different resources by interacting with the environment, such as chopping down trees or mining rocks, which yield materials for crafting and upgrading equipment. Throughout your journey, you’ll also acquire crafting recipes and more valuable resources, allowing you to create advanced and specialized tools.

As you travel across the regions of Pywel, you’ll encounter villages, towns, and cities with various shops and vendors, where you can both buy and sell items, including equipment, materials, and everyday provisions like fruits and food supplies.
Blacksmiths sell weapons, while tailors provide armor and protective gear. Thier inventory may vary depending on the location and region, encouraging exploration to find specific gear and resources.

Cooking will be an essential part of Crimson Desert, as different meals can provide temporary boosts to your Health, Spirit, and Stamina, giving you an advantage in combat and exploration. Throughout your journey, you’ll discover the cooking recipes you need, while fishing and hunting will provide the ingredients required to prepare them.
Meanwhile, alchemy allows you to craft a variety of items, including dyes and medicines that provide different benefits, such as enhancing your combat abilities and giving you an edge in battle.

You’ll be able to customize your party’s appearance, including hairstyles, tattoos, and outfit colors using dyes. Different dyes can be acquired throughout your journey or crafted through alchemy.

Beyond combat and exploration, Crimson Desert features a variety of minigames and side activities that offer rewards and provide a break from the main story. These optional diversions include card games, horseback racing, arm wrestling, target shooting, and more.

The game also features a dynamic, free-form combat system that emphasizes player freedom and flexibility. Combat is designed to feel more like a fighting game than a traditional RPG, with a strong focus on combos and chaining attacks. You can switch between a wide variety of weapons such as sword and shield, spears, greatswords, axes, and ranged weapons, use skills, and take advantage of mounts and the environment to gain the upper hand.
Combat incorporates grappling, elemental enhancements including burn, freeze, and stun, as well as advanced mobility options like slides, dodges, and counters. This allows you to adapt your tactics in real time, approach encounters in multiple ways, and tailor your fighting style to each situation.

Crimson Desert lets you swap between three playable characters, each with unique combat styles and abilities. You start as Kliff, the main protagonist, who excels in a balanced fighting style with versatile weapon use. As the story progresses, you’ll unlock Oongka, a powerful warrior specializing in raw strength and heavy weapons, and Damiane, an agile fighter who combines magic and ranged attacks for a more technical approach to combat.

In Crimson Desert, there is no traditional experience-based leveling system. Instead, each character has their own skill tree, and you can unlock and upgrade abilities using Abyss Artifacts obtained from quests, boss battles, or hidden locations discovered during exploration.
Progression is centered on unlocking skills, customizing, and upgrading equipment to enhance your stats and overall combat effectiveness. In addition, there are also special skills that can only be acquired by observing and interacting with different NPCs throughout the world, encouraging exploration and engagement.

As you progress, you will be able to you customize your equipment to boost stats and add special effects through the use of Abyss Gears. Your equipment will have slots that you can fill with these gears to enhance attributes and unlock bonuses such as increased attack speed, damage, or critical hit chance, allowing you to tailor your weapons and armor to suit your preferred playstyle.
