Use His Pump Kick Against Him

The best way to defeat Matthias is by using the Watch and Learn mechanic to learn his Pump Kick during the fight and using it against him. Make sure to distance yourself first, as this move requires you to charge up before you can execute it.
Successfully hitting Matthias with the Pump Kick should leave him completely vulnerable, giving you a huge opening to attack and whittle down his health.
Let Him Attack First Before You Retaliate
Aside from his Pump Kick, Matthias typically fights with his sword to execute various slashes that can catch you off guard if you are too close. Try to keep your distance and let him attack first since his moves can be easily telegraphed due to their long recovery times, then start retaliating after he finishes his combo to slowly whittle down his health.
Keep Your Shield Up to Block Attacks
Lastly, we highly recommend keeping your shield up during the fight since Matthias does not have any high stamina consumption attacks that you cannot block. Observe his movements while holding your shield up so you can easily block any unsuspected attacks that can knock you down and leave you vulnerable.

| Pump Kick | Matthias briefly winds up and charges at you to perform a double flying knee kick that can easily knock you down. Observe his stance and watch out for his left knee so you can dodge away as soon as he performs the attack. |
| Double Slash | Matthias winds up his sword behind him to perform a wide sweeping slash and immediately follows up with an overhead slash. Keep your distance when he performs this move as it has a long wind up animation that gives you enough time to roll backwards and avoid getting hit. |

Matthias allows you to learn the Pump Kick skill during the fight. Keep in mind that certain skills can be obtained by either starting the boss fight, using the Watch and Learn mechanic, or defeating the boss themselves, depending on the boss you fought.
For skills learned through the Watch and Learn mechanic, note that you must have the camera facing the Boss once they perform the move and hold down the Interact button to learn their skill.

Found at the City of Hernan during Chapter 2
Matthias can be located at the City of Hernan during the Hernand in Chaos main questline after approaching the group talking about Greymanes. Doing so will immediately start a cutscene that results into Matthias challenging you to a fight.
