Recruit Byleth

The Secret Ending is only available after successfully recruiting Byleth, who will appear in the final battle for one of the late-game Chapters.

The exact Chapter will vary depending on the Path you chose, but it is easy to identify by the message which appears at the start of the battle stating that Your actions in this battle will greatly impact the outcome of the story. This is your signal to save your game and make sure that you're ready to retry in case you fail to recruit Byleth successfully.

How to Recruit Byleth

Beat Chapter 14

After completing Chapter 14 on any path, a cutscene will begin which signals the start of an additional Chapter 15 which does not occur for players who did not recruit Byleth. Chapter 15 follows into Chapter 16, after which the story returns to the main path for the Final Chapter.

The Final Chapter and its Ending will be the same regardless of if the player recruited Byleth or not, but Chapters 15 and 16 are exclusive to the Byleth route.

Recruit Arval

After you complete the game in a file where you recruited Byleth, Arval can be purchased from the Personal Quarters for 60 Renown in the endgame or a New Game Plus save file.

What Happens in the Secret Ending?

The Secret Ending does not actually take place at the end of the game, but instead appears as two new additional chapters, Chapter 15: The Hour of Vengeance and Chapter 16: Into the Chasm, occurring after Chapter 14.

The contents of these chapters seem to be the same on every Path, with the exception of the playable characters who appear in Chapter 15, which will match your Path. Please leave us a comment if you notice any other differences between these chapters among the three paths.

Chapter 15: The Hour of Vengeance

Without warning, Shez becomes possessed by Arval, unleashing their mysterious power and attacking Byleth. The other party members will go after Shez, and a battle will begin where Shez must be defeated. In the end, Solon will appear as a boss and must be defeated to complete the chapter.

Solon will escape being killed by the leader of the House you chose, but Shez, still possessed, shows up and finishes Solon off. This sacrifice creates a mysterious portal to a dimension of darkness called Zahras. The heads of all three Houses arrive on the scene, but are swallowed up by the portal and warped to Zahras, where Chapter 16 will begin.

Chapter 16: Into the Chasm

Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude must work together with Shez to defeat Arval, who is being controlled by a force called Epimenides. At the end of the chapter, Epimenides is defeated, and Arval disappears for the remainder of the story.

This serves as an ending to the saga of Shez and Arval, which is not explained in any of the game's main endings.
