Increasing your character's level will greatly benefit you when trying to get an S Rank requirement because of your improved stats. It'll be much easier to defeat enemies, giving you a faster completion time and more enemies defeated.
There are ways to increase your level, but the fastest is to keep defeating enemies as much as you can as you progress through the story.

Giving you and your allies powerful weapons is one way to increase the chance of getting an S Rank. This will allow you to defeat enemies much quicker and increase the number of enemies you defeat, giving you more time to complete the objectives.
You can buy weapons from the armorer back at the camp and use them to equip your allies with weapons to make them stronger.

Make sure to cook and eat food before heading to battle as it gives beneficial effects that will surely help you out on the battlefield. This can range from reducing weapon durability loss to making your warrior gauge fill slightly faster. You can talk to the Kitchen Master at the Recreation Quarter and select a recipe you like to get you started with cooking.
Keep in mind that you'll need activity points to be able to start cooking, as well as the resources needed for the recipe. You can get the resources from resource pouches by defeating enemies, while activity points are refilled at the start of a new chapter.

Assigning an ally as your adjutant is very important whenever you're trying to get an S rank due to all the benefits you can get from it. When assigned, the active character will have their stat raised based on the adjutant's class. You will also get support follow-up attacks, guards, unique support, and tactical abilities when you have one assigned.
Most importantly, you'll get the partner specials, which deal a lot more damage than what you'll get from normal specials. It's also important to get a high support level, as getting a high level will enhance the effects of having an adjutant.
Always try to issue orders whenever your allies get something done to complete the missions as fast as possible, and since the game is paused whenever you're at the menu, you have all the time you need to plan out your attack and clear your objective.
Try to aim for key targets, especially ones you have an advantage over, as defeating them will give you a chance to pick up item drops that may restore your durability or increase your warrior or awakening gauge.
Item Drops Explained
If you're trying to level your characters up and want it to be less time-consuming, then getting an S Rank will be beneficial to you, as getting one will reward you with bonus experience. Furthermore, achieving an S Rank will allow you to get additional rewards exclusive to that rank.
Make sure to get the S Rank on your first attempt, so you won't have to try doing the battle again to get the reward, save from farming experience points.
Battle Rank is a mechanic in this game that grades the player based on their performance over the course of the battle. You are given the following rank based on your performance: S, A, B, C, and D, with S being the highest among the ranks and D being the worst.
Your performance will be evaluated based on 3 factors that form an evaluation criterion:
Criteria | Description |
---|---|
Completion Time | The time needed to complete to end the battle. |
Enemies Defeated | The amount of enemies you need to defeat within the duration of the battle. |
Damage Taken | The amount of damage you took during the battle. |
In order to get the highest possible rank, you need to meet the requirements of the criteria. This is shown on the pre-battle menu screen or from the menu during battle. The requirements needed to meet the criteria will vary from mission to mission.
