Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Review

Pros Cons

Pro: Integrated Mainline Fire Emblem Mechanics

One thing Three Hopes gets right is the way they integrated mainline Fire Emblem mechanics into a Warriors game.

Support Conversations

FEW3H - Byleth (F) (Expedition)

Is it really based on a Fire Emblem game if players don't get to play dating simulator every now and then? Support conversations are certainly a great addition to Three Hopes! It helps players get to know each character better and the story behind their motivations.

Weapon Triangle

Sword > Axe > Lance > Sword

Bow > Gauntlet > Tome > Bow

The weapon triangle is a staple in every Fire Emblem game. Even though Three Hopes is a Warriors game, it definitely did a good job incorporating the weapon triangle to the game.

The blue and red arrow marks indicate if your team can take on the enemies in the battlefield. It's a reminder that players should have a diverse set of classes for each battle.

Camp Feature

Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes - Volunteer at the Camp

Similar to how you could do activities as a professor in Garreg Mach in between battles in Three Houses, Three Hopes allows you to contribute to the war effort as a mercenary by doing chores, preparing meals, and upgrading facilities in your Camp. It's unfortunate that players can't pet the cats and dogs in the camp but who knows? Maybe they'll fix it in a future DLC.

Camp Features and Things to Do

Pro: Enjoyable Combat

FEW3H - Byleth Divine Pulse

Another thing Three Hopes gets right is its combat. It is highly enjoyable and it fulfills a player's power fantasy. Who wouldn't feel powerful going against hordes of enemies and still emerge victorious?

Three Hopes' combat has a lot of variety too! It boasts a total of 44 playable characters, each with an ability unique to them. Their classes can also be changed easily, giving players a variety of playstyles to choose from.

Pro: Great World Building and Overarching Story

FEW3H - Areadbhar

Three Hopes also has great world building and overarching story.

Taking a break at a camp to use the facilities or going on expeditions to bond with other characters deeply immerses a player into the game. Furthermore, upgrading the facilities not only allows the players to access better and stronger facilities but also gives the feeling of progress and development in the camp.

The game also did great in immersing the player into the story. Aside from the few documents scattered around the camp, the game is also filled with plenty of cutscenes that can help you understand the history and motivations of the house you joined.

Story Walkthrough: List of Chapters

Con: Takes Too Long to 100%

FEW3H - Innate Abilities

The game is loaded with plenty of mechanics to keep the player going but it gets too repetitive at one point.

The grind that players need to do to get all innate abilities, reach level 120, 100% all achievements, acquire each character's action ability, or even forge each unit's weapon to reach max stats can be a bit much.

Playing all three routes and understanding the story is enough for players to appreciate the game.

Post Game Content

Con: Characters' Stories Aren't As Fleshed Out

FEW3H - Yuri Support Conversation

Although the game did a good job telling each of the houses' story and motivations, it didn't really flesh out most of the individual characters' stories.

Players only get a glimpse of the characters' stories through support conversations, paralogues, and a few dialogues during battles. However, even with all of these combined, their stories remain lacking.

It's hard to blame the game though since it has a large cast of characters. It could be that they just didn't have enough time to flesh them all out.

Con: No Marriage

FEW3H - Merc Whistle Gift to Dimitri

Unlike mainline Fire Emblem games, Three Hopes does not have a marriage mechanic. While it is disappointing, the game implemented a new mechanic instead - the Merc Whistle. It's an item that you can give to another unit once you have reached Support Level A with them. The unit then gives you a special item in return that allows you to have access to their action ability.

Despite not being able to marry the unit you want, you'd still get the butterflies once you see how your 'special friend' will react when you give them your Merc Whistle.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Is Worth It

FEW3H - Edelgard Dimitri Claude

Despite its shortcomings, Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes is still very much worth it. It's a high action combat game with a profound story, enjoyable combat system, and amazing cast of characters. It's very fun to play and has a lot of gameplay mechanics that players can enjoy.

If you're the type to enjoy these kinds of games, don't miss out on Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes!
