Should You Play The World Ends with You (TWEWY) First?

TWEWY and NEO TWEWY

Playing The World Ends with You (TWEWY) is not necessary to fully understand the plot for NEO: The World Ends with You (NEO: TWEWY) but it helps you appreciate the finer details found in the game.

Finishing TWEWY helps spot numerous Easter Eggs found in NEO: TWEWY that either paid homage to the first game or referred to in conversations (for example: A lot of conversations with recurring characters mentioned the previous Reaper's Game which is the main plot of TWEWY).

The World Ends with You: The Animation

Should you want to know more about the previous Reaper's Game but don't have the means or the time to play the original game, an anime adaption, titled Subarashiki Kono Sekai in Japanese, premiered on April 2021 which summarized the events of the first game in 12 episodes. You can watch the anime in these sites.

The World Ends with You Background

TWEWY

The World Ends with You (TWEWY) was first released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS and was ported to the Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android systems in 2018, titled The World Ends with You -Final Remix-.

TWEWY is one of the few games which gameplay utilizes both the buttons and touchscreen of the Nintendo DS. You control Neku in battle using the stylus and touchscreen while controlling his partner using the D-pad and the upper screen. The port for Nintendo Switch, on the other hand, utilizes the touchscreen and the Joycons for both Neku and his partner, which made it playable in both docked and handheld mode.
