Press the R button (Switch) / R1 button (PS4) to scan your surroundings. This will allow you to visualize enemies and thought fragments around the area, which you can only interact with when the scan function is activated.
Scanning is one of the main methods to look for fights in the game. Enabling the scan function will reveal enemies in the form of Noise symbols around the player. Getting near towards these symbols will provoke them and follow the player to initiate combat.
Scanning also allows players to hear people's thoughts. These are called Thought Fragments, which are blue speech bubbles displayed above a person's head. Get near one of these pensive persons and interact with them to get an insight into what's on their mind.
