How to Start the Pond Smelt Catch Contest

Talk to Zaza to Start the Contest
Go to the God Shrine at the Winter Village between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM and talk to Zaza. Take note that there will be a lot of people in front of the shrine, which might make it harder to get to Zaza quickly.
If you do not talk to Zaza before 9 AM, the contest will be canceled automatically.
Go Fishing Until 7 PM
Once you speak to Zaza, the fishing contest will begin. A tracker will be displayed on the left side of the screen which will display your current rank and how many Pond Smelts you've caught so far, as well as the placement and current catches of other participants. This will last until 7 PM, when the contest will end automatically and winners will be announced.
Do note that your current party will be disbanded for the duration of the contest, and speaking to Zaza will not end the contest early.
How to Win the Pond Smelt Catch Contest
Fish at Watarase's Fishery
The goal of this contest is to catch as many Pond Smelts as you can by fishing in fishing spots. Pond Smelt is a freshwater fish that can luckily be found right at Winter Village.
Once the timer starts, fast travel to Watarase's Fishery southwest of the village. The fishing spot by the boat consistently produces only Pond Smelt, so it's highly recommended to fish here.
If this fishing spot runs out of fish shadows, fast travel to another village, then fast travel back to Watarase's Fishery. The fish shadows should replenish.
Fish Until 7 PM
The other contest participants don't appear to know about this special fishing spot, so you're almost guaranteed to win as long as you fish here.
You will have about 17 minutes to fish until it is 7 PM in the game. You'll be able to easily reach and secure first place as long as you keep fishing the entire time, but you do have the luxury to go at it at a leisurely pace.
Other participants will slowly score points, and you'll be able to see from the ranks on the left side of the screen if anyone is close to catching up with you.
Pond Smelt Catch Contest Rewards
Valuable Medal for Winning
If you manage to get first place in the Pond Smelt Catch Contest, you will be given the Valuable Medal. This is a commemorative item that can be sold for money.
Ice Crystal
You can also get an Ice Crystal for winning the Pond Smelt Catch Contest.
In addition to these rewards, you also get to keep all of the fish that you caught during the contest.
Increased Happiness and Gold
Completing the Pond Smelt Catch Contest will increase your Village Happiness, as well as reward you with Gold based on your placement in the contest.
