The Plum Branch is used to perform the Dance of Bonds in front of statues. This includes save statues that also serve as fast travel points and the frog statues that give recipes.
No need to equip the Plum Branch to do the dance. Simply approach a statue, and press the button prompt that appears for Dance of Bonds. The Plum Branch will automatically be taken out for this action.
You only need to perform the Dance of Bonds once per statue. This means that you can just approach a save statue and save without having to perform the dance again. This also means that each frog statue can only give you one recipe in your playthrough.

You can use the Plum Branch in front of villagers to perform the Dance of Bonds for them. This allows you to get closer to the affected villager, increasing your Bond.
If this functions similarly to the Greeting Spell in Rune Factory 5, only one Dance of Bonds per villager per day will have an effect on villager Bond levels.

Once you have access to Monster Barns, you will be able to befriend monsters using the Plum Branch.
To befriend a monster, perform the Dance of Bonds in front of it until you see a smiley face (☺) on top of its name. Defeat this monster, and you will be able to give it a gift. If it accepts your gift, it will be added to your Monster Barn.

The Plum Branch can be used to revitalize the seasonal gods of Azuma during the main story of the game. Perform the Dance of Bonds in front of the sacred object of the god, such as Ulalaka's sacred tree and Matsuri's sacred sword, and their power will be restored enough for them to start appearing in the overworld.
