Big Boss Tanuki can be found within the Mechanical Maze, and is fought during the main quest Mikoshi Hunt.
To fight Big Boss Tanuki again, simply interact with the violet orb in the boss arena to initiate the rematch.
To befriend the Big Boss Tanuki, perform a Dance of Bonds during the fight, until you see the befriend icon show up underneath its HP bar, and proceed to defeat it. Once it gets back up, interact with it and gift it a Sweet Potato. Keep in mind that you only have 3 chances before the dance wears off and the Boss disappears.
Big Boss Tanuki also takes up 4 Barn Spaces, so make sure that you have enough space for it in any of the dev zones before attempting to befriend it.
| Main Weapon | Secondary Weapon |
|---|---|
| Short Daggers | Iron Bow |
The Short Daggers are the basic Dual Blades, which works effectively against Big Boss Tanuki, since it has a weakness to Dual Blades and Wind Attacks.
Bringing the Iron Bow as a secondary weapon allows you to still deal damage against the boss from a distance, which can be useful when trying to recover HP.

| Takenaga Ribbon | Wandering Warrior's Pauldron | Bronze Bracelet |
The Takenaga Ribbon, Wandering Warrior's Pauldron, and Bronze Bracelet are all equipment that can be crafted from recipes found before reaching Mechanical Maze.
Equipping all three increases your defensive stats, allowing you to tank more hits from Big Boss Tanuki before needing to heal.

Unlocking the Charge Attack from the Dual Blades Skill Tree can greatly make the fight easier.
The Dual Blades' Charge Attack deals massive damage especially once the boss is stunned.
Using the Sacred Fan Dances can also be helpful during the fight, due to Big Boss Tanuki's weakness to Wind Attacks.
Big Boss Tanuki has long wind-ups between attacks, so after it lands an attack, it has a long window before it performs the next.
Use this opportunity to build stagger, until you eventually stun the boss, allowing you to deal even more damage faster.
During the Big Boss Tanuki boss fight, you can use the Sacred Fan Attacks once it's stunned to deal more damage.
Using the Sacred Fan's wind attacks when the boss is stunned is the best way to defeat the boss, and when combined with the Dual Blades' Charge Attack, the fight should be finished much faster thanks to the high damage output.
Performing a Perfect Dodge gives you a brief window of opportunity where the monster is slowed, allowing you to freely perform your combos.
Defeating Big Boss Tanuki the first time frees Kotaro, where he reveals he has acted based on Kurama's instructions.
