Available Only at Winter Village Level 2
Like all the Fishing Contests, the Squid Catch Contest is only available after increasing the Winter Village to Level 2. You need to progress the Winter Village Main Quests until you rescue the Winter God to unlock the higher Winter Village levels.

How to Start the Squid Catch Contest

Talk to Yachiyo to Start the Contest
On the day of the Squid Catch Contest, go to the Autumn God Shrine Plaza at the Autumn Village between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM and talk to Yachiyo. There will be a lot of people gathering at the plaza when the contest is about to start.
If you do not talk to Yachiyo before 9 AM, the contest will be cancelled automatically.
Catch the Biggest Squid in the Contest
The Squid Catch Contest will begin after talking to Yachiyo and will last until 7 PM, when the winners will be announced.
A tracker will be displayed on the left side of the screen which will display your current rank and the largest Squid that you've hauled, as well as the placement of other participants.
Do note that your current party will be disbanded and you'll have to fight the monsters alone if you decide to fish in the wilds. Additionally, speaking to Yachiyo will not end the contest early.

Head to the Fishing Isle
Once the timer starts, run towards the fishing spots at either side of the God Shrine and start fishing. There are three fishing spots in the immediate area, and you can run to the dock on the west side of the Summer Village for two more fishing spots then to the east side for the last fishing spot.
Catch a Spear Squid
The best place to find a Squid for the Squid Catch Contest is the Fishing Isle, located north of the Winter Village in the Skies of Azuma map.
The Spear Squid that you can catch here is naturally larger than the other types of Squid the other contestants will catch, so you will easily get and secure the top spot even if you only catch one of these.

Squid Catch Contest Rewards
Sticky Rice and Lion Scroll
On top of the Sticky Rice that you'll get for participating, you will also be given a Lion Scroll if you manage to get first place in the Squid Catch Contest.
Increased Happiness and Gold
Completing the Squid Catch Contest will increase your Village Happiness, as well as reward you with Gold based on your placement in the contest.
