The opening missions of Death Stranding 2 can be pretty sluggish, especially if you have a habit of picking up Lost Cargo as you link up Mexico. Your first big upgrade will be unlocking the Tri-Cruiser.
This vehicle will allow you freely explore and level up your connections with facilities and preppers in Mexico after having to go through the BT boss fight during Order No. 006.
When you finally reach Australia, make your way to the Government's Base and link it to the chiral network. For your efforts, you'll get a motion scanner for your Odradek and you'll unlock Backpack Component fabrication.
While the starter backpack components are great, you can raise your Government's Base connection level to 2★ and 3★ since those unlock the the Chiral Antigravity Device (allows you to carry more stuff) and the Large Spare Ammo Container Lv1, respectively.
Your next big upgrade will be waiting for you in Order No. 010. Free the Western Environmental Observatory from bandits to finally unlock your first Skeleton - the Battle Skeleton Lv1. When equipped, Sam moves faster and is less likely to trip and fall.
To get better Skeletons, you can opt to raise your connection level with the Western Environmental Observatory to 4★ since this unlocks the Battle Skeleton Lv3 upgrade. Alternatively, you can continue on to Order No. 021 to get the Boost Skeleton Lv1, instead.
Once you do have a Skeleton equipped, you can work to upgrade it even further by leveling up your Porter skill to Level 20. Once you reach this threshold, you'll unlock the APAS Enhancement: Skeleton Auto-Assist. When purchased using Memory, this skill helps you pilot your Skeleton, making it easier to use and balance.
List of All Skills (APAS Enhancements)
Aside from direct upgrades, a big quality-of-life improvement is access to fast travel in Death Stranding 2. In order to unlock this feature, you'll need to beat the boss during Order No. 012 and link West Fort Knot to the chiral network. With this unlocked, you can easily go back to Mexico for anything you may have missed.
Two of the best Anti-Human and Anti-BT weapons can be obtained in the starting areas of Australia. Link the Lone Commander to the chiral network to get the Tranq Sniper Rifle, then link the Musician to the network to get the Shotgun [MP].
If you want better versions of the Shotgun, you can look to raise your connection level with the Muscician to 3★ in order to get the Shotgun [MP] Lv2 - a higher damage variant with an underbarrel grenade launcher.
To make cargo runs easier, you'll also want to pick up the Floating Carrier in West Fort Knot (F1). Connect them to the chiral network to get Floating Carrier Lv1, then raise your connection level with them to 3★ to get Floating Carrier Lv2 (can carry more weight).
How to Unlock Floating Carrier
For vehicle choices, a direct upgrade to the Tri-Cruiser will be the Pickup Off-Roader. Not only can it carry more cargo, it can also be upgraded to carry a Sticky Cannon which allows you to pull and retrieve packages from the safety of your vehicle.
To unlock the Pickup Off-Roader, complete Order No. 013. You can then get its Sticky Cannon attachment by completing Order No. 020.
