List of Contents

Death Stranding is set in an alternate post-apocalyptic future where an event called the Death Stranding has caused the downfall and separation of humanity. Humans now live in shelters, and the only ones brave enough to venture out are porters, who transport vital cargo across the United Cities of America.
Sam Porter Bridgesis one such deliveryman, who carries a rare condition called DOOMS, which allows him to sense Beached Things (BTs) and avoid them. Because of this condition, Sam is also a Repatriate, which means that he can come back to life if killed by a BT.

After learning that Sam is the son of Bridget Strand, the president of America, we are left with her dying wish: to reconnect the United Cities of America. This reconnection would be done via the Chiral Network, a supernatural network that allows people to talk and also teleport across distances.
Sam was resistant to the idea, until his sister Amelie contacted him via a Chiral Network hologram, revealing that she had been kidnapped by a militant group called the Homo Demens, while attempting to reconnect the United Cities of America.

On his journey to Edge Knot City in an attempt to rescue his sister, Sam was attacked by a man named Higgs. Higgs was the de facto leader of the militant group known as Homo Demens whose purpose was to maintain Edge Knot City's independence at all costs, even if it meant engaging in acts of terrorism and violence to sabotage the UCA's attempt at reconnecting America.

It is soon revealed to Sam that his sister Amelie is the sixth Extinction Entity, a being whose sole existence brings forth mass extinctions, and that she was also the one leading Homo Demens from the shadows.
We soon discover that Sam's adoptive mother Bridget Strand and sister Amelie are the same person, body and soul separated, together the same Extinction Entity that would engulf humanity in the Final Stranding.

It is revealed that Sam is the son of Clifford, a war hero who was tricked by Bridges into giving up his child for a project that would turn Sam into a BB, reconnecting America.
It is also revealed that Sam had died as a baby after an escape attempt by Clifford, but was brought to life by Amelie, who had given him the ability to repatriate.

In a final act of compassion, Sam embraces Amelie, realizing the importance of physical connection with other people. Thus, Amelie postpones the extinction, trapping herself on the Beach for longer, but warns Sam that death will still come for humanity in the long run.

Die-Hardman, the director of Bridges becomes the third president of the UCA, Fragile establishes Fragile Express as a private delivery company approved by the UCA, and Higgs was kept alive and stranded on the beach, and harboring hatred toward Fragile, bides his time until the right moment to exact revenge.
Lou, Sam's BB and trusted companion throughout the whole journey, had apparently died but was soon resuscitated by Sam, with maybe a little help from Amelie. Turning out to be a girl, Louise spends her new life with her father Sam, thus marking the end of Death Stranding.

The story of Death Stranding 2 takes place 11 months after the events of the first game, and will take place outside the United Cities of America: Briefly in Mexico and primarily set across the entire continent of Australia. Sam is living a peaceful life with his daughter, Louise.

We learn that Lou, Sam's daughter, will die at some point in the game, as shown in the 2022 The Game Awards Teaser Trailer. Although it is implied there may be something about Lou that both Sam and Fragile are in the dark about.

The porter company Bridges had disbanded due to distribution being fully automated in the UCA. Fragile has now set up Drawbridge, a new civilian-owned company that is funded by a secretive benefactor.

Humanity is still in danger of extinction, and that is what Fragile has recruited Sam for. On her flying ship, The DHV Magellan, Drawbridge undertakes a mission even bigger than before: To reconnect the rest of the world like Sam previously did for the UCA.

We see glimpses of a mysterious new armed group full of robots led by a masked man, who is revealed to be none other than Higgs himself. His new company is responsible for distribution of goods across the continent via robots.

Then, we are introduced to a brand new character called Tomorrow, played by Elle Fanning, who emerged from a tar chrysalis, and is purported to be central to the events that transpire in Death Stranding 2.
A summarized version of the story from part 1 can also be viewed from the game's main menu. The game has a 17 page slide summary of the first game's story.
