I somehow managed to get this by getting a picture of a Volcarona emitting the blue lines at the crystalbloom, not at the other Volcarona.
Yeah, so, going the shorter route definitely worked for me too - made it a bit easier to hit the Volcarona. Also, it made the timing clearer to me: you gotta get a picture of them extending blue lines of energy between them, that's what they're using to communicate.

So I was getting fed up trying this, and I think I found a good rage method: just hold down R2!! I ignored them both in the first area, and in the second, they couldn't handle the R2 and kept flying into me, so they were easy to hit!! They ended up flying over and looking at a lower crystabloom, which ended up counting!! <3
This only worked for me after finishing the game.
I had no luck when going the alternate route when you hit the left Volcarona. I tried 10+ times and couldn't fulfill the request even though it looked like both were looking at the crystabloom. I went the other way (where they were much easier to hit with the fluffruit) and got a picture that fulfilled the request the first time on that route.
