To take a 1 Star photo of Mareanie, go to the Reef (Day) course research-level 2. At the last part of the course, you'll find a bunch of Mareanie chasing a Corsola. Throw an Illumina Orb at the Mareanie on the farthest right. Then, zoom in on your camera and take a close-up photo of Mareanie with Corsola in the frame to achieve 1 Star Diamond.

Go to the same area of the course, and throw an Illumina Orb at any Mareanie. Take a close-up shot of it while it is walking to achieve 2 Star Diamond.

Go to the same area of the course for the third time, and take a photo of the Mareanies while they are chasing a Corsola. Make sure to zoom in on your camera and take a close-up shot to achieve 3 Star Diamond.

This 4 Star Photo is attainable through the request Mareanie's a Meanie.
Near the end of the main route of Reef (Evening), you will encounter 2 sleeping Clamperl on a rocky area beside a Drifblim. Throw fluffruit onto the area closer to the Drifblim and a Mareanie will pop out. It will then attach itself to one of the Clamperl. Snap a photo of Mareanie at this moment to attain the 4 Star photo.
